1. Why do historians study Geography? To show connections between people and places.

2. How does geography affect human behavior? Mountains can be used for protection from invaders; waterways allow trade; clothing, religion, and culture are influenced by geography.

3. Where is the world’s largest desert located? The Sahara Desert (in Africa) is the world’s largest desert (3,500,000 square miles).

4. How does the burning of fossil fuels affect climate? The burning of fossil fuels affects climate by adding to the greenhouse affect, creating global warming, and acid rain.

5. What is a canal? A canal is a man-made water passage.

6. Where is the Suez Canal? The Suez Canal is located in Egypt (a country in Africa).

7. Define peninsula A peninsula is a body of land with water on three of its borders.

8. Name 3 countries that are peninsulas Italy, Korea, and Vietnam are three countries that are peninsulas.

9. How has topography and climate affected Africa? Topography and climate have made Africa culturally diverse.

10. Define deforestation Deforestation is the clearing or removal of trees.

11. What causes acid rain? Acid rain is caused by the burning of coal, oil, and natural gas.

12. Define greenhouse effect The earth’s surface absorbs the sun’s radiation. This heats up the earth.

13.Where is the Aswan Dam located? The Aswan Dam is located in Egypt.

14. What is the proper name for a chain of islands? A chain of islands is known as an archipelago.

15. Define Urbanization Urbanization is the growth of cities.

16. Define Sub-Saharan “Sub-Saharan” refers to the area of Africa south of the Sahara Desert.

17. Define desertification Desertification is the transformation of farmable land into desert.

18. Define Latin America Latin America is made up of South and Central America (including Mexico)

19. How have mountain ranges, rain forests and river systems affected Latin America? Geographic features such as mountains, rain forests, and rivers have been a barrier to trade and communication.

20. Define Arable Arable land is land that is used for farming.

Summary Using the pre-test, write down any words you don’t know. Create your best definitions for each word. We will use this “word journal” to prepare for our test on Geography.
