Driving Innovation Competition Scope and Background Merlin Goldman 27 September 2011

Driving Innovation Background Biosciences Strategy Innovation Growth Team Report –Est. world market for industrial biotechnology in 2007 of £35–53 billion, approximately £1.8b attributed to the UK (AD Little) –UK should try to become a global IB knowledge centre (AD Little) Up to 2.5 billion tons of CO 2 could be eliminated by 2030 through the use of industrial biotechnology (World Wildlife Fund)

Driving Innovation What’s already been done? Industrial Biotechnology Leadership Forum Subject Interest Group led by KTNs Developing High Value Chemicals through Industrial Biotechnology –19 feasibility projects –Predicted 3-year value creation attributed to competition: £16m, 16 patent and 50 jobs Manufacturing High Value Chemicals through Industrial Biotechnology –10 feasibility Projects & 4 collaborative R&D projects

Driving Innovation

Producing High Value Chemicals through Industrial Biotechnology Feasibility £1m A company that is unfamiliar with biotechnology has the opportunity to judge the feasibility of an alternative method of chemical synthesis. A company with expertise in industrial biotechnology has the opportunity to test a new process or apply an existing process to a new product class. Collaborative R&D £1.5m Existing, proven processes based on industrial biotechnology must demonstrate that they can achieve comparable or improved productivity at production scale, to encourage further private investment.

Driving Innovation What’s Changed? All projects must be collaborative cR&D is single stage Projects should aim to be within the ranges specified –£ k (Feasibility), £500k-£1m (Collaborative R&D) Projects that include a Norwegian SME may be able to receive funding from Innovation Norway for that company –All projects must be led by a UK company

Driving Innovation Life Cycle Analysis – Q11 LCA is a technique to assess the environmental aspects and potential impacts associated with a product, process, or service, by: –compiling an inventory of relevant energy and material inputs and environmental releases; –evaluating the potential environmental impacts associated with identified inputs and releases; –interpreting the results to help you make a more informed decision.

Driving Innovation European and International Focus on increasing UK business success in accessing European funding and maximising benefit Influencing Europe Bilateral activities which align with our strategic priorities and where there is benefit for UK business Exchange of information on innovation KTN European & International activities Working with Science & Innovation Network and UKTI
