Two Presidents George Washington Abraham Lincoln George Washington was born on February 22, 1732. When he was a boy, America belonged to England, a country across the sea. George’s family lived in a big house. Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809. When Abe was a boy, he lived in a log cabin. A log cabin is a small house made out of logs cut from trees. Abe’s father cut down the trees and made the cabin.

Two Presidents George Washington Abraham Lincoln George’s family was rich. He rode a horse to school. Abe’s family was poor. Often he went barefoot because he didn’t have any shoes.

Two Presidents George Washington Abraham Lincoln A legend is told about George as a boy. Young George had a new hatchet, and with it he cut down a small cherry tree. When his father saw the tree, he was mad. “George,” he said, “did you cut down that cherry tree?” George was afraid to say that he had. Nevertheless, he decided to tell the truth. “Yes, Father,” he said, “I cut down the cherry tree with my hatchet. I cannot tell a lie.” George’s father was proud of George for telling him the truth, even though it was hard. There were no electric lights in the cabin; electricity had not been invented yet. Young Abe read books by the firelight and wrote with charcoal on a shovel.

Two Presidents George Washington Abraham Lincoln As George grew up, he heard people talking angrily. They were saying that America didn’t want to be part of England any more. America and England fought a war, and George was a “general” of the American army. When Abe grew up, he studied hard and became a lawyer. Later, Abe was elected to be a lawmaker. He went to Washington, DC.
