Presentation transcript:

What is a phrasal verb? It's the combination of: a verb + a particle (preposition or adverb) that results in a new phrase with a new meaning. The new unit is different from the two separate words. Phrasal verbs are very common in spoken and written English so we need them to understand and speak natural English. Knowing phrasal verbs are also one of the best ways to learn how to use prepositions.

Examples Examples:  She's looking after the kids  I've decided to give up smoking.  What will she say when she finds out?  The cowboy slowly headed into the town.

Separable and Nonseparable Phrasal verbs are either separable or nonseparable.  If they are separable they CAN be separated.  Example: took off  I took my shoes off. I took off my shoes.  Nonseparable phrasal verbs CAN NOT be separated.  Example: ran into  He ran into a tree. He ran a tree into. There is no rule to help you know when a PV is separable or not. 
