4 Phrasal verbs Phrasal verb consists of a verb and a preposition that modifies or changes the meaning. look out take in make up VERB + PREPOSTITION

5 Intransitive verbs These don't take an object Ex: They had an argument, but they've made up now. Inseparable verbs The object must come after the particle. Ex: They are looking after their grandchildren. Separable verbs With some separable verbs, the object must come between the verb and the particle: Ex: The quality of their work sets them apart from their rivals.

6 Meaning of a phrasal verb A phrasal verb has two meanings: Literal meaning: Look out : an action of looking outside. Idiomatic meaning: Look out : be careful

8 Run out : Literal meaning : the action of running outside. Idiomatic meaning: nothing left, not having enough. While he is running out, he ’s listening to music

9 Look up Idiomatic meaning: Find (as in a dictionary or a reference book) Example: I don't know this word. Would you look it up in the dictionary for me?

10 Literal meaning : the action of head up to look at something above Example : The kid and the woman are looking up the sky.

11 Pick up Literal meaning : pick something on ground up. Ex: He is picking up the trash. Idiomatic meaning : to collect somebody Ex: Remember to pick me up at 8 o’clock!

12 Turn on Meaning : Start (a light or machine) Example: It's too dark. Turn on the light please The boy is turning on the TV

13 Come up with Come up with Meaning : think of the solution Ex: Finally, we come up with the answer for this difficult situation.

14 Literal meaning Idiomatic meaning The plane has just taken off. Please take off your coat and sit down. Oh,no ! The lights have gone out again. If you go out, take an umbrella. Hello? Hello?
