Introduction to the New Testament The New Testament books are grouped together into 4 main genres: 1. Gospels 2. History 3. Letters 4. Apocalyptic The genres are placed within the Bible in a general chronological order by events (not authorship date.)

THE NEW TESTAMENT

We’ve waited for 400 years… A lot has happened to the Jewish people…

What is the first chronological event of the New Testament?

The Young Jesus The Bible doesn’t tell us a lot about this time. 1.Baby Jesus 2.Two year old Jesus 3.Twelve year old Jesus

The Life and Ministry of Jesus This is where we see Jesus gaining disciples, teaching, performing miracles, and traveling. He seemed to have started around 30 years old. This period may have lasted years.

The Death of Jesus The appointed time had come for Jesus to die on the cross. He is crucified and buried.

The Resurrection of Jesus God raises Jesus from the dead. Sin is paid for and true salvation possible. Jesus appears to his disciples over the course of 40 days.

The Accession of Jesus After appearing to the disciples over a period of 40 days, Jesus goes back up into Heaven. He asks the disciples to wait in Jerusalem and pray.

The Holy Spirit Comes After waiting and praying in Jerusalem, the Holy Spirit comes upon the church. They start praising God in many different languages. Many people in the city hear the message of God in their native language. Peter preaches and many believe.

Evangelism The believers in this new way spread out and begin telling everyone they can about Jesus. The numbers begin to grow. Persecution starts to happen too—especially from a man named Saul of Tarsus.

Paul, a new ally Saul of Tarsus becomes a Christian. After a few years of training, he begins preaching the gospel in Turkey, Greece, and Italy. The church grows.

Advice to the churches Many churches and groups have formed, but they need help. Many of the church leaders, especially, Paul write letters to these new churches in order to correct and give good advice about God’s will.

A special revelation The church of God is growing. There are lots of church groups all over now. There have been troubles, but the numbers are growing. When John, a disciple of Jesus, is aged and near the end of life, God shows him a special revelation. God shows John what some of the events of the end of the world will look like, and how God will have the ultimate victory.
