Human trafficking and sexual exploitation

The line between forced and voluntary prostitution is very thin. Prostitution itself is seen by many as an abusive practice and violence against women. In Sweden, Norway and Iceland it is illegal to pay for sex The client commits a crime, but not the prostitute. These countries consider all forms of prostitution to be exploitative or slavery.

Traffickers sometimes use offers of marriage, threats, intimidation and kidnapping as means of obtaining victims. Some migrating prostitutes become victims of human trafficking. Some women know they will be working as prostitutes, but they have no idea of the circumstances and the conditions.
