2  Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”  Genesis 2:4: “This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens.”

3 “God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them…and God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. Gen 1:27-28,31 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it Gen 2:15

4 When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens—and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no man to work the ground, but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground—the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being…. The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. Genesis 2:4b-7,15 – NIV

“God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” Gen 1:28 5

The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him….” 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man…. 24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. Gen 2:18,21-22,24 6

“Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field.” Gen 2:19-20 “The man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the” Gen 3:8 7

8 1. Value creation: People are essentially built to create value, as God himself does. 2. Common Good: People’s work is intended to benefit others, and not only self. 3. Relationships with people: People are intended to work in community 4. Relationship with God: Work is a fundamentally spiritual activity, or at least it should be.

 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. 25 On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. 26 The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. Rev. 21:

10 NO! “By grace you have been saved, through faith — and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works so that no one can boast. We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:8-10

11  People disobeyed God, violated the limits (Eve and Adam ate the one disallowed fruit)  People broke the community (Adam blamed Eve for it)  They did it all on the job (While tending the garden)  Everyone after has repeated the mistake “There is not a righteous man on earth who does what is right and never sins.” (Ecclesiastes 7:2)

To the woman God said, “I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat of it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living. The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. Genesis 3:16-21

13  Sundering of profit from value creation  Sundering of creation and distribution of value  Sundering of good activities from successful outcomes  Fallen world/fallen individuals (“original sin”/ “personal sin”)

14  Office conflict  Oppressive working conditions (e.g., Wal- Mart labor fine)  Hard disk crashes  Poor quality results, even when you try hard sometimes, e.g. unsuccessful surgery  Examples from you…

15 Ponzi schemesMissed deadlines Caused by fallen persons Excessive executive Caused by fallen systems Value distribution (common good) failures Value creation failures Yellow = example causes Poor schools

16 Self-worth dependent on pay & position Backstabbing, gossip, bickering Caused by fallen persons Dehumanizing working conditions Ruthless competition for promotions Caused by fallen systems Relationship to God marred at work Personal relationships marred at work Yellow = example causes

17 1.Value creation: Profit sometimes measures value creation 2.Common Good: People sometimes work just for their own ends 3.Relationships with people: Great relationships sometimes occur at work 4.Relationship with God: Work sometimes becomes an idol
