3 The Doctrine of Man – the Imago Dei
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion … .” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. … “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion … .” (Gen. 1:26-28, ESV) [T]hen the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. (Gen. 2:7-8, ESV)

4 The Doctrine of Man – the Imago Dei
The man is made uniquely by God intimately and personally. The woman is also made intimately and personally, but further, she is made particularly by God in identity (mankind) and in contrast to man (womanhood). Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” (Gen. 2:18, ESV)

5 The Doctrine of Man – the Imago Dei
So, the man and woman share the glory of their unique creation: Man and woman are equal before God. “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion … .” (Gen. 1:26, ESV)

6 The Doctrine of Man – the Imago Dei
So, the man and woman share the glory of their unique creation: Man and woman are equal before God. And … the Lord God … brought her to the man. Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; … Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. (Gen. 2:22-24, ESV) Within the bond of marriage the husband and wife have designated roles and relationships.

And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” (Gen. 2:15-17, ESV)
