Part 1 … what’s our role suppose to be in Afghanistan?

Instructions for Part One: Canada’s Mission Goals - Afghanistan For part one of this assignment use the Canadian Government Website: – Canada In Afghanistan Canada In Afghanistan Fill in the slides provided with the information requested in your own words. This is at most a partner (1 or 2 person) assignment! Each slide will also contain a picture of Canada’s war/mission in Afghanistan which you will provide a link to. – See the example on the title page of this presentation and then ask for help if you do not know how to create links. – You pictures cannot all be from the same site.

Priority One: Security How is Canada Providing Help ? By: – Providing guidance to the ANP and ANA – Collecting support for them – Working towards a greater connection between the justice system and the ANP – What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011? 1) That the ANP will have greater capabilities to hold order and promote law. 2)That with help from the ISAF allies, the ANA will be able to provide a more secure environment.

Priority Two: Basic Services. How is Canada Providing Help ? By helping the Afghani government provide – Better education – Better roads – Improving irrigation and access to potable water – What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011? 1) Increase the amount of irrigated land 2) Train more teachers p3TD0/s400/afghanistan+war+election+5.jpg

Priority Three: Humanitarian Aid How is Canada Providing Help ? By: – Providing more vaccinations – Providing food to people who are in weakening situations – Getting rid of mines – What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011? 1)To continue to provide assistance to Afghan refugees and returnees 2)To continue clearing mines.

Priority Four: Border How is Canada Providing Help ? By: – Helping communications between both sides of the border – Providing training for border officials – Providing important roads and equipment – What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011? 1)Have increased discussion between Pakistan and Afghanistan 2)Finish border crossings pakistan-afghanistan-border.jpg

Priority Five: National Institutions How is Canada Providing Help ? By: – Provide money and other kinds of support for Afghan presidential elections – Give specific national institutions training, gear, and course support. – Work with other donors to support the Independent Elections Commission – What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011? Priority Six: Reconciliation How is Canada Providing Help ? By: – Putting $14 million toward this – Assisting the Afghan government in communications – Helping develop devices run by the Afghan government that encourage discussion – What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011? 1)That the Afghan government will be better able to communicate with it’s people 2)That there will be specific institutions for promoting communication

Signature Project 1 – Dahla Dam and Irrigation System Why is this an important project for the people of Afghanistan? – To bring water to more parts of the country and create more jobs. What is Canada doing to help? 1) Providing farmers with water management guidance 2) Providing repairs to canals and different parts of the dam.

Signature Project 2 – Education in Kandahar Why is this an important project for the people of Afghanistan? - Enhancing education will bring a greater sense of equality and boost confidence in getting a job. What is Canada doing to help? 1) We’re building and repairing schools 2) Increasing the quality that the Ministry of Education can provide

Signature Project 3 – Polio Eradication Why is this an important project for the people of Afghanistan? - More people would be healthy and there would be less fear in their own home.
