Unit 8 Seminar Job Offer

 Review of Unit 7  After the interview  Follow-Up Letter  Negotiating the job offer  What to do if you don’t get the job  Case Studies  Question/Answers

Do’s Don’ts  Research salaries in your field  Consider your experience  Highlight what you have done to deserve the salary you seek  Be flexible  Ask for the offer in writing  Don’t feel obligated to take the first offer  Don’t talk about how much money you need  Don’t just focus on salary (look at entire package)  Don’t inflate your current earnings

 It is important to know what your job responsibilities are and then compare those to what is currently available in your area. Use websites like Salary Wizard.com and payscale.com to help you determine the salary range in your field. This will give you an idea of what the market is paying  It is important to know what is the minimum salary you would accept for the position. Don't go any lower than this in your negotiations (this way, you aren’t' pricing yourself out of a job). You would not accept an offer for less than this anyway).

 Interviewers are obligated to give feedback, but some are helpful and genuinely want to help you make progress with your career.  Recall a time when you did not get a job. Given what you have learned in this course, please think about what you learned from that experience…

 Should I call the company to find out why?

 Did I turn it into a positive learning experience?  How can I turn a rejection into a positive learning experience?  Would practice have helped me?

 Appearance  Non-verbal communication  Attitude

 Jim lives in a retirement community and wants to take-on a part-time job to supplement his income. He applies at Chic- Fil-A, a company known for hiring retired persons. Several people applied for the position, and Jim was not chosen. He is very angry and calls the store manager threatening an age discrimination lawsuit if the is not hired.

 Susan applies for a job as a teller in a national bank chain. When she fills out the application, she states that she has filed for bankruptcy 2 years ago. The person screening the application doesn’t notice the bankruptcy and calls the applicant for an interview. After the interview, the HR manager notices that the applicant filed for bankruptcy and cannot be hired per bank policy. Susan receives a letter stating that someone else was hired. When Susan calls the bank, the HR manager tells her that the bank can’t hire candidates with a bankruptcy. Susan gets very angry because she feels the bank wasted her time by calling her in for an interview. Susan tells the HR person that she will tell everyone she knows about the bank’s unfair hiring practices.

 Thank you for taking the time to meet with me tonight! I know you have very busy schedules and appreciate you taking time out to attend the seminar.  Please make sure to contact me with any questions that were not covered in tonight’s seminar.
