Location Sound I

Sync Sound Record sound while camera is rolling Read scene/take number Clap sticks together You now have a sync point - a visual and audio reference which you can match together in post (manual syncing)

Sync Sound Another option is to sync audio and video by matching time code. Each frame is assigned a unique address HH:MM:SS.FF The 702T embeds TC into each wav file, and if you have a TC capable camera you can automatically sync your audio to picture. If you choose to sync sound for your MOS you will do it manually.

On Set Before camera rolls- make sure boom is not in frame. “can I get a frame line?” AD: “Roll Sound” you:“Speed” AD: “Call it”Clapper: “scene two beta take three” AD: “Roll Camera” DP:“Speed” Clapper: “Mark it”Clapper: [clap sticks] DP: “Frame”director: “Action”

Sync Sound 702T Menu settings: If you need to re-set the time of day: 57) Time/Date: Set > 40) TimeCode: Frame Rate > 30 41) TimeCode: Mode > 24 Hour Run

Sync Sound Slate TC Rate : 30 RUN mode

Jam slate to 702T Power off slate Connect to 702T Turn on slate Automatically jams (time code should read exactly the same on 702T and slate) Any time you power off the slate you have to re-jam.

Sync Sound for MOS You are required to record sync sound for any shot with sound-making action Anything you don’t record in sync, get wild You are expected to hand in your MOS with a full soundtrack, so please give serious consideration to sound.

Exteriors Use shotgun (416) for hard sfx, cardiod (CK91) for backgrounds and ambience Try to boom from above. Windy? Use fluffy windscreen. Don’t point mic straight into wind. Raining? Windscreen can handle very light sprinkling. Heavy rain? Sound blankets. Condom on mic. “Rainman”

702T and the PD150 Breakaway cable Mic inputs - LINE or Mic? 48V ON or OFF? Send tone to camera to set camera audio levels (-20dB)

Sound Reports

Exterior Sync Sound Exercise Group: sound director DP AC (clapper) actor Record a scene where the actor is sitting down reading a newspaper, then stands up and hurries away after hearing something offscreen Each group member must record sound. Try different camera and sound perspectives. Hand in: sound reports, mini DV tape Please indicate who is recording on the sound report

Week 4 Assignment: Script Analysis for Sound Read through and circle anything that makes sound. Make a list of sounds to record for each scene. Categorize into sync sound or wild sound Jot down any ideas you have for mic technique. DUE Monday Oct. 19, hand in or Sc 1 Sync: Footsteps (walk, pace) … Sc 1 Wild: Room tone inside phone booth … Idea- record phone ring from diff. mic perspectives in case director wants to play in post. Record inside and outside phone booth, close up and distant.
