AVID is an academic, regularly scheduled elective class based on writing as a tool of learning, inquiry method, and collaborative grouping. The three main components of the program are: academic instruction, tutorial support, and motivational activities.

Rigor is the goal of helping students develop the capacity to understand content that is complex, ambiguous, provocative, and personally or emotionally challenging. AVID strategies such as Socratic Seminars Cornell Notes Inquiry Cubes Tutorials (Peer Tutoring) allow students to drill deeper into the understanding of the subject matter and not just skip across the surface of learning. WICR strategies are rooted in rigor to push student understanding to a new level and produce thinkers, not just information reciters.

The AVID elective class component is designed to work with the specific students selected to be in the AVID elective. The elective work on reading, writing, collaboration, and inquiry skills. The teacher shows them how to use Cornell Notes to enhance their learning, organize their materials, investigate colleges, volunteer, public speaking, and other “hidden skills” not taught in the classrooms 53 9th grade students at RHS 16 10th grade students at RHS.
