1 A Centennial Middle School Introduction
Introduction to AVID A Centennial Middle School Introduction 1-5 Shep and Matt 6-7 Lisa 8 Shawndra and Diana 9-10 Michelle/Tim 11-13 Heidi and Jen 14-17 Diana and Ashayna

2 This overview will include:
What is AVID? Why is AVID right for Centennial? The four domains of AVID Implementation plan (focus on first year) WICOR Overview Someone take note of questions to be sure we capture what people ask.

3

4 What is AVID? Advancement Via Individual Determination
A structured, college preparatory system working directly with schools and districts A direct support structure for first-generation college goers, grades 4-12 A schoolwide approach to curriculum and rigor adopted by nearly 4,000 middle schools and high schools in 45 states and 15 countries A professional development program providing training throughout the U.S.

5 AVID Mission Statement
AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

6

7 Why AVID?

8 What is an AVID Student Meets One or More of the Following Criteria:
First to attend college Historically underserved in four-year colleges Low income Special circumstances Students With Academic Potential: Average to high test scores GPA (the “academic middle”) College potential with support Desire and determination

9 Schoolwide Implementation
Add ‘marking the text’ as they read the brochure. Avid offers a blueprint for the scaffolding that will support our students as they meet the rigorous expectations of a college-bound middle and high school experience. Have copies of the brochure and let people silently read. Critical Reading/Marking the Text I can look for something quick from the critical reading book?? These domains are discussed briefly in the brochure. We can give a few more bits of information here and possibly show the evaluation tool on the document camera so they can see how we evaluate our implementation over time?? Or have a copy of it for each person or table??

10 Implementation Plan - Year 1
CMS has two Site Goals: Instruction: Use AVID Organizational Tools to keep track of coursework and to organize their thinking and learning Systems: Collaborate to increase awareness about AVID to other faculty and staff AVID eventually expands to have school-wide impact, but will begin with the AVID elective. We will implement some organization strategies this year that we believe will have a positive impact on all students.

11 Implementation Plan - Year 1
Instruction Systems Leadership Culture *Rigor for All- Advanced *CMS agenda *AVID 3-ring binder (encouraged) *Introduction of Cornell Notes *AVID Elective Class *Wednesday Advisory Period *Pathways & Summer Institute *Initial WICOR training *Staff awareness about AVID *College Readiness Mission and Vision *AVID Site Team meetings *Collaboration through PLCs *College Spirit Days *Teacher College Corners AVID eventually expands to have school-wide impact, but will begin with the AVID elective.
