The Route To Your Success Your success will not be judged by a report card, but by your service and loyalty to your cadets & Staff of LWMA Your success will not be judged by a report card, but by your service and loyalty to your cadets & Staff of LWMA

The following “you Musts” are essential for your success: YOU MUST WANT IT: You must have the desire, dedication, and commitment to lead, train, and care for the cadets under your command. YOU MUST HAVE THE BASICS : The basics are a sense of duty, honor, courage, loyalty, humility and respect. The following “you Musts” are essential for your success: YOU MUST HAVE COURAGE: As Leader, you are responsible for everything that happens. If you think an action is right, stand up and say so, and explain why. While opinion may not always satisfy your cadets, you will establish a reputation as a cadet whom they know looks out for their welfare. Be smart when you take this stand. The following “you Musts” are essential for your success: YOU MUST BE FAIR: If you are fair in everything you do, everything else will fall into place. Being fair is treating every cadet even-handedly and with individual dignity and respect. Leaders who set double standards, will immediately begin to undermine your cadet’s trust and their willingness to follow your example. There is no substitute for fairness. We do not have two systems of fairness, here, at the Lyman Ward Military Academy. YOU MUST BE FAIR: If you are fair in everything you do, everything else will fall into place. The following “you Musts” are essential for your success: YOU MUST LEAD BY EXAMPLE: The most important attribute for success is leading by example. If you lead by example in everything you do, you will succeed. Be a second-to-none role model. Cadets will follow a leader who lives both a “do as I say” and “do as I do” attitude. YOU MUST CARE: The “Gut-most” important point is that you must care for your cadets assigned under you, ALL OF THEM. You must be sincere and willing to go the extra steps for the young men under your charge. Only grudgingly will cadets follow a leader who’s just going through the motions of command. YOU MUST HAVE CONFIDENCE : If you don’t believe in yourself, nobody else will. If you are decisive and show your cadets that you are eager to help solve their problems, the confidence will become contagious. YOU MUST BE WELL ORGANIZED: A Cadet Leader has more to do than he can ever personally accomplish. Remember: If you try to do it all yourself, you will fail. ESTABLISHING YOUR STANDARDS : Your Standards are the foundation. Be tough and fair, but be reasonable. Involve your fellow cadets when dealing with standards, because you want your standards to be their standards. If they understand your standards, enforcing them will be easy. Whatever you do, don’t ignore the standards you have set, because when you do, you have then set new and lower ones. If you don’t enforce standards, you’re in for a difficult year. Set the Example As Cadets progress through the ranks by promotion, all too often they take on the attitude of “do as I say, not as I do.” Nothing turns Cadet’s off faster! Your duty is to set the standards for your cadets by personal example. Your personal appearance, attitude, physical fitness, and personal example are all Double standard for your Cadets, and you will lose their respect. Know the cadets you lead and look out for their well-being This is one of the most important of all the principles. You should know about their individual backgrounds Birthdays, strengths, weaknesses, and anything else that may be of value to you. Knowledge of your Cadet’s personalities will enable you, as the leader, to decide how to best handle each of them and determine when close supervision is required. Ensure that the Task is Understood, Supervised and Accomplished Your Cadets must know what Is expected of them. You must be able to communicate your instructions in a clear, concise manner. Before your Cadets begin a task, allow them to ask questions, or seek advice. Supervision is essential. Without supervision you will not know if the assigned task is being properly accomplished. Allow your subordinates to use their own techniques, and then periodically check on their progress.
