You will finally be able to say “was,”“saw,” and “did” in French!
Le passé composé = Avoir ou être + le participle passé
Another word for “auxiliary” is “helper.” The helper verb for the passé composé is usually avoir, but for SOME verbs it is être. We will learn more about the être verbs later.
For –er verbs, change the ending to –é. For example: mangeré
For –ir verbs, change the ending to –i. For example: finiri
For –re verbs, change the ending to –u. For example: répondreu
chanteré
parleré
écouteré
choisiri
grandiri
rougiri
vendreu
perdreu
attendreu
There are some irregular p ast participles: faire → fait voir → vu vouloir → voulu
The verb aller is one of the verbs that takes être in the past tense instead of avoir! So we don’t say: J’ai allé We say: Je suis allé
Put the verb in the passé composé: Je (manger): __________________ J’ai mangé
Put the verb in the passé composé: Tu (finir): __________________ Tu as fini
Put the verb in the passé composé: Elles (répondre): _________________ Elles ont répondu
