2 What is the past tense?  It is used to express an action that occurred in the past.

3 In English...  There are 5 different past tenses. I worked = simple past I have worked = present perfect I was working = past progressive I used to work = with helping verb “used to” I did work = past emphatic

4 In French...  There are only two! Pass é Compos é Imparfait

5 Simple past vs. compound past  Simple past consists of one word I worked  Compound past consists more than one word an auxiliary (helping verb) and a main verb  I have worked

6 The passé composé  It is a compound tensecompound tense  It is formed with the auxiliary verb avoir or être conjugated in the present tense + the past participle of the main verbauxiliary verbthe past participle  auxiliary + past participle = pass é compos é avoir/être

7 auxiliary verb / helping verb  It helps the main verb express its self in another tense.  It is used in a compound tense.  There are only two auxiliary verbs in French. avoir et être

8 Past Participle  It can be regular er = é ir = i re = u  Or irregular the ones you have to memorize!  The past participle is used as the main verb in a compound tense.
