Presentation transcript:

How to Read the Periodic Table Write down at least the green stuff

Step 1 Atomic Symbol The Atomic Symbol is one or two letters that stand for the element name The letters may stand for the English name or the Greek or Latin name (This one is Arsenic, a poison that causes death)

Step 2 Atomic Number The Atomic Number is at the top of “the box” The Atomic Number is the number of protons in each atom of that element

Step 3 Atomic Mass The Atomic Mass is the average number of particles in the nucleus. Protons and Neutrons have the same mass – they each weigh 1 atomic mass unit

Step 4 Electrons The number of electrons will be the same as the number of protons Since atoms like to be in balance, the negative- charged electrons like to balance out the positive charged protons

Step 5 Neutrons A. The atomic mass is the average number of particles in the nucleus, so first, we have to round this decimal. B. Next, subtract the number of protons. C. What’s left is the number of neutrons

Step 6 Valence Shells Since Arsenic is in the 4 th row down, it will have 4 valence shells

Step 7 Outer Electrons Since Arsenic is in Column 5A, it will have 5 outer electrons

That’s the basics. Now try it out…

Sodium is vital to human life, but it is toxic in its pure form. Sodium metal is highly reactive with water, and explodes on contact. Protons? Electrons? Neutrons? Valence Shells? Outer Electrons?

Gold has been prized for centuries. It is shiny, malleable, and does not corrode. Most expensive electronics have gold components inside. Protons? Electrons? Neutrons? Valence Shells? Outer Electrons?

Protons? Electrons? Neutrons? Valence Shells? Outer Electrons? Tungsten has the highest melting point of any metal, so it is used inside light bulbs, televisions, x-ray machines, drill bits and spacecraft. Its symbol coms from its German name, Wolfram.
