PROTON Proton: the positively charged particle found in the nucleus of an atom.
PERIOD Periods are the rows going across. They are numbered from 1-7 and indicate how many energy levels (shells/orbitals) the element has.
ATOM An atom is the basic unit of an element! Each atom has a nucleus surrounded by electrons.
NEUTRON Neutrons are found in nucleus with protons. Neutrons have NO charge.
ELECTRON Electrons surround the nucleus of an atom in the electron cloud. Electrons have a (-) Negative charge!
VALENCE ELECTRONS The electrons found in the outer most energy level/shell/orbital.
ISOTOPE Isotopes are elements that have more neutrons than the original element but still share the same chemical properties.
NUCLEUS The dense center of an atom. Where the protons and neutrons are located.
GROUP The columns on the periodic table. Groups indicate how many valence electrons each element in that column have.
ATOMIC MASS Protons (or atomic number) + Neutrons = Atomic Mass !
What’s that again?? VOCAB Review time!
Atoms Chapter 2, Section 1.
Structure of an Atom.
Mr. Olivas thinks this is him. I don’t get it!. * Smallest part of an element * Has all the properties of the element.
Atomic Structure Section The Nucleus Nucleus- contains most of the mass of an atom – Protons & Neutrons contains most of an atom’s mass – Electrons-
Atomic Structure Nucleus – contains protons and neutrons
Structure of an Atom. What Is an Atom? An atom is often referred to as the building block of matter. Atoms have a nucleus surrounded by an electron cloud.
The Periodic Table & Electron Energy Levels
Atomic Mass & Number Isotopes The Periodic Table.
The Periodic Table. Define the following terms. 1. proton 2. neutron 3. electron 4. nucleus.
Atoms 8.5A The student is expected to describe the structure of atoms, including the masses, electrical charges, and locations, of protons and neutrons.
The Periodic Table of the Elements. Elements: pure substances made of only 1 kind of atom Period: row of elements across table every element in period.
Periodic Table How to use it…. ATOMIC NUMBER: The number of protons in the nucleus. It is the number of protons that identifies the element
