Jeopardy – The Elements

Elements and Pure Substances Metal, Nonmetal, or Metalloid The Atom The Periodic Table 100 200 300 400

What is the definition of an element?  An element is any substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances.

What is the definition of a pure substance?  A pure substance is made of only one type of particle

Are all elements pure substances? Explain  Yes, because all elements are made of only one type of particle.

Is water an element, pure substance or both? Explain  It can be a pure substance, but NOT an element because it is made of hydrogen and oxygen.

What are some properties of a metal?  Metals are shiny, durable and good conductors.

Oxygen is an example of a …  Nonmetal

Which is the smallest group on the periodic table?  Metalloid

Name one metalloid on the periodic table.  Boron, Silicon, Germanium, Arsenic, Polonium, Antimony, Tellurium

Where are neutrons found in the atom?  In the nucleus

Which part of the atoms are the smallest?  The Electrons

Why are the protons so important to scientists?  Because they determine the element

Draw a picture labeling each part of the atom.

Why is hydrogen #1 on the table?  Because it has only one proton

Why are some of the symbols on the table much different from there names?  Symbols are based of off Latin names

The periodic table is also arranged by metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. Which group is on the right?  Nonmetals

The table is arranged by rows and columns, what are the scientific words for those rows and columns?  Rows = Periods  Columns = Groups or Families
