Prof. Dr. Alexander Klee Flensburg University of Applied Sciences School of Business Kanzleistr Flensburg, Germany Academic Podcasting Revisited – Practical Experiences, New Applications, Limitations

 Prof. Dr. Alexander Klee | Flensburg University of Applied Sciences 1 Content 1. Academic Podcasting – State of the Art 2. Didactic Strengths and Weaknesses of Podcasts 3. "Old" and "New" Uses for Academic Podcasts 4. Summary

 Prof. Dr. Alexander Klee | Flensburg University of Applied Sciences 2 Podcasting Podcast = Set of digital media files (audio/video) made available for automatized download through the internet (subscription model) Podcast vs. Classic Download Types of Podcasts  Audio  Video  Enhanced (slides & sound)  String of episodes  No user activity required

 Prof. Dr. Alexander Klee | Flensburg University of Applied Sciences 3 iTunes U – Major Driving Force in Academic Podcasting

 Prof. Dr. Alexander Klee | Flensburg University of Applied Sciences 4 Selective Empirical Findings on Academic Podcasting  PC use does not affect class attendance rates significantly (Brittain/Glowacki/ Van Ittersum/Johnson 2006, Lane 2006, Malan 2007, Klee 2008)  Students use PC selectively for repetition (Lane 2006)  PC users display a better exam perfomance than non PC users (McKinney/Dick/Luber 2009)  Students believe PC use has positive impact on exam grades (Brittain/Glowacki/Van Ittersum/Johnson 2006)  Audio format is preferred over video/enhanced format (Brittain/Glowacki/Van Ittersum/Johnson 2006)  Yet, PC are more frequently consumed on laptop computers than on iPods/ MP3 players (Edirisingha/Rizzi/Nie/Rothwell 2007, Deal 2007, Klee 2008)  Most commonly noted shortcomings of lecture recordings is inability to hear questions from students / discussions (Lane, 2006).  High Levels of overall satisfaction with PC resources (Brittain/Glowacki/Van Ittersum/Johnson 2006, Lane 2006, Malan 2007, Klee 2008)

 Prof. Dr. Alexander Klee | Flensburg University of Applied Sciences 5 Producing Academic Podcasts Example: ProfCast (Shareware) Presentation

 Prof. Dr. Alexander Klee | Flensburg University of Applied Sciences 6 Content 1. Academic Podcasting – State of the Art 2. Didactic Strengths and Weaknesses of Podcasts 3. "Old" and "New" Uses for Academic Podcasts 4. Summary

 Prof. Dr. Alexander Klee | Flensburg University of Applied Sciences 7 Didactic Strengths and Weaknesses of Podcasts  Multisensory appeal  Emotionalized appeal  Higher degree of activity in consumption  Individual lear- ning pace  Push media  Portability  Freedom & flexibility  No personal student- teacher interaction  No student-student interaction  Social experience is lost  "Too much of liberty"?  Form beats content? (EduTAINment?)  Fosters passive reception mentality  Poor quality ("amateur production") Increased didactic effectiveness (absorbing, processing, storing knowledge)

 Prof. Dr. Alexander Klee | Flensburg University of Applied Sciences 8 Content 1. Academic Podcasting – State of the Art 2. Didactic Strengths and Weaknesses of Podcasts 3. "Old" and "New" Uses for Academic Podcasts 4. Summary

 Prof. Dr. Alexander Klee | Flensburg University of Applied Sciences 9 Uses of Academic Podcasts Technology Target Group Producer Audio Video Enhanced Full time students Executive students External (not enrolled) Function lecture recordings stand alone podcast (complementing lecture) stand alone podcast (substituting lecture) stand alone podcast (unrelated to lecture) lecturer student external

 Prof. Dr. Alexander Klee | Flensburg University of Applied Sciences 10 Academic Podcasting Today: "Old" Uses Major points for increasing "didactic yield" of academic podcasts 1.Selective and considerate use of podcasting (weighing pros & cons) 2.Install internal promoters on campus 3.Use external benchmarking / gathering ideas (iTunes U) 4.Resolve implementation issues  IT Infrastructure  Copyright Management  Psychological Barriers (Lecturers) – "freedom of speech" – "liability risks" – technical expertise

 Prof. Dr. Alexander Klee | Flensburg University of Applied Sciences 11 Academic Podcasting Tomorrow: "New" Uses  PC as distant learning technique in executive studies  Use in international student projects  Broaden / complement own teaching program by "buying" external courses  PC production as exam / for coursework presentation  PC as add-on for paper publications  PC as e-publication in its own right (e.g. for ongoing research projects)  Make lectures/seminars/conferences available worldwide (to be continued…) Networking University/ Business International relations Sharpen academic profile Improve student education Enhance (international) distribution of research output Address new target groups/ generate sales/profits
