LESSON 11

Day 1

Words with VCV  Discuss the meanings of the spelling words.  Say “vanish,” “suburb,” and “mimic.”  Is the first syllable in each word pronounced with a short or long vowel sound?  short  Words with VCV pattern are usually pronounced with a short vowel sound.

Listening Comprehension  Genre – folktale  stories passed down from generation to generation  plot teaches a story  reflect the customs and beliefs of a culture  This folktale is from India.  Purpose: To find out what lesson this folktale teaches.  Good readers read aloud at a pace they use in a conversation and do not read too quickly or too slowly for listeners to understand.

To pay homage to a person or thing is to show great respect to that person or thing. How do you think the animals of the jungle treated the blue jackal before his fur was dyed blue? They probably treated him like an ordinary jackal. To be crestfallen means to feel very disappointed after feeling very happy or confident.

 What lesson does this folktale teach?  The folktale teaches that those who treat others poorly will end up alone and miserable.  Why is the blue jackal alone at the end of the story?  He is alone because he lied to the animals in the jungle, and he treated the other jackals poorly.  This week’s story is about real animals whose colors can change.

Read page 282.  Text structure is the way an author organizes nonfiction text.  Cause and effect is one kind of text structure.  A cause is an action or event that makes something else happen.  An effect is what happens as a result.  Clue words can help readers identify the organization of the text.

Cause and Effect clue words and phrases  because  if  then  since  therefore  so that  when  as a result

Draw picture demonstrating cause and effect.  rain – get wet  study for test – make good grade  practice – make team  read – become more fluent and better at it

Read page 283.  Think Aloud: The word because in the first sentence is a cause and effect clue word. The first part of the sentence tells the effect: Prairie dogs live in large groups. The cause is that prairie dogs need a way to survive.  Reread and find another cause and effect clue word and identify the next cause and effect in the paragraph.  Clue word is “if.” causeeffect A prairie dog senses danger. It barks.

Comprehension Strategy: Use Graphic Organizers  As you read, you should record the information from the text and organize it in a graphic organizer such as a chart or diagram.  Graphic organizers will help you understand how concepts fit together and remember the information later.  When reading nonfiction text, you should first identify the text structure, such as cause and effect, and then select the appropriate graphic organizer to keep track of the information.

Use sequence charts to organize the order of events in a selection. Use a cause and effect diagram to keep track of causes and effects in texts. Use a Venn diagram to show how things are alike and different. Use a web to list details related to a main idea or important concept.

The word because in the second sentence is a clue word that often signals a cause and effect relationship. The graphic organizer that should be used with this passage is a cause and effect diagram. The cause is “predators might be nearby”, and the effect is “the jackrabbit is alert as it eats.” The words “as a result” signal another cause and effect relationship – “the snake leaves when the jackrabbit kicks it.”

Background  In this week’s story, you will learn about some methods that animals use to survive in the wild.  Why do animals need to hide? Why do animals need to hide? to sneak up on prey to not be noticed by predators to find a safe place to live to protect their young

Develop Concept  Some animals in the wild hide to protect themselves and their young from animals that want to eat them.  Animals that blend into their environment, so they can’t be seen, have a better chance to survive because their enemies have a hard time finding them.  Some animals blend into their environment so that they can sneak up on animals that they want to eat.

What kinds of fish are predators – goldfish or sharks? A certain eye color is a trait. Which members of your family do you share that trait with? How would you lure a mouse into a trap? What is something you could do to avoid a mean-looking dog? How might you mimic the way a cat behaves? What makes it obvious that it’s raining outside? Does a dog resemble a wolf? Explain. Would you trust a deceptive person? Why or why not?

Read page 284.  Why would a plant be a surprising predator?  Why would eating insects be a unique trait for a plant?  How do the leaves of the Venus’ flytrap lure insects?

Read page 285.  How does the Venus’ flytrap mimic plants that are not predators?  If the Venus’ flytrap resembled a predator, would insects land on its leaves? Why or why not?  What might a fly do if it were obvious that the Venus’ flytrap ate insects?  How does the deceptive appearance of the Venus’ flytrap help it survive?  Why should insects avoid the leaves of the Venus’ flytrap?

The End!!!
