2 Discussion If you were an author, what science topic would you like to write about?

3 Predators are animals that kill and eat other animals. What kinds of fish are predators – goldfish or sharks?

4 Traits are particular qualities or characteristics of a person or thing. A certain eye color is a trait. Which members of your family do you share that trait with?

5 If something lures you, it makes you want to go to it, even though it is dangerous or could get you in trouble. How would you lure a mouse into a trap?

6 If you avoid a person or thing, you keep away from them. What is something you could do to avoid a mean looking dog?

7 If you mimic a person or thing, you try to act or look exactly like that person or thing. How might you mimic the way a cat behaves?

8 If something is obvious, it is so easily seen or understood that no one has to explain it. What makes it obvious that it’s raining outside?

9 If one person or thing resembles another, the two look similar to each other. Does a dog resemble a wolf? Explain.

10 A deceptive person or thing tries to make you believe something that is not true. Would you trust a deceptive person? Why or why not?

11 Prefixes, Suffixes, and Roots A word part added to the beginning of a word. Suffix A word part added to the end of a word. Root The basic word part that gives the word its meaning. T132 Look at the chart below and discuss examples of prefixes, suffixes, and roots with your partner. Prefix

12 -ly What is the root word? sudden What does the word sudden mean? Quick and without warning How does the suffix -ly change the meaning of the word? Adding –ly changes the meaning to “in a way that is quick and without warning.”

14 not What is the meaning of -able? Having the quality of What is the meaning of desire? want So, when the word parts are put together, undesirable means… not having the quality of being wanted.
