3 Vocabulary Take out your student reader and turn to page 7. Read “Words 2 the Wise.” What do you notice? Can you use the words environment and wildlife to describe any of these pictures.

4 Vocabulary This week’s concept is animal answers. Animal answers are ways animals survive in different environments. Some animals blend in with their surroundings to hid from their enemies. Other animals travel in large groups for safety.

5 Vocabulary The week’s vocabulary is related to the concept of how animals survive in different environments. This week’s vocabulary words are: adapt, environment, protect, survive, and wildlife.

You can already read words like these. What are the words? What is the vowel sound in these words? What letter makes the sound? Now you will learn another vowel sound for “a.”

18 Word Work This person is an artist. An artist draws and paints pictures. You can see the work of many artists in museums. What sound do you hear at the beginning of artist? Say it with me: /ar/. This is the same vowel sound you hear in park. The letter “a” followed by “r” has a sound that is neither short nor long, but r-controlled. An r-controlled vowel can be spelled with the two letters “ar” to make /ar/.

19 Word Work hard The two letters “ar” stand for /ar/. This is how I blend this word: /h/-/ar/-/d/, hard. Now you try: /h/-/ar/-/d/, hard. The letters “ar” stand for the vowel sound, /ar/.
