Focus on Value: Improving the Way We Work Luca Boi, MHA Sr. Value Engineer University of Utah Health Care

Lean Culture: Toyota Way Continuous Improvement Respect for the People Create Flow Eliminate Waste Everyone engaged Problem solving Value to our customers

The principle Focusing on Value allows us to ask if our activities are moving us forward in delivering what our customers expect from us.

Therefore: If what we are doing, doesn’t move us closer to delivering what customers expect from us, that step in the process should be eliminated Value Added Vs Non Value Added

Lean in Action Meals per hour

Lean in Action Meals per hour:

Where to start Effectiveness: Efficiency: the degree to which something is successful in producing a desired result; success Efficiency: The state or quality of being efficient, or able to accomplish something with the least waste of time and effort; competency in performance

Effectiveness through Standard Work It is common sense, the one way to do something that everyone (or most everyone) agrees is the best way Clear expectations reduce variation

Standard Work: Examples

Eggs Over Easy & Toast 2ND SHELF Cook 1. Pan on stove, tablespoon butter in pan. Preheating medium 5 min. 2. Crack eggs into bowl (note more than 2 eggs at a time increases difficulty). 3. Plug in toaster, set to level 4 (middle). Place bread in toaster. 4. Poor eggs into center of hot pan, holding bowl no more than 3 inches above pan. Jiggle pan slightly to keep them from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Cook approx. 1.5 min until whites are set. Season to taste with Salt and Pepper. 5. Start toasting bread. 6. Flip egg over with spatula. Loosen edge of egg, and ensure it is not stuck to pan. Lift from pan, keepings spatula and egg no more than 3 inches above surface. Rotate wrist inward, slowly so that egg slides off and sits in pan opposite side down. 7. Wait 30 seconds and remove from pan using the spatula to first loosen edge and then pick up. Place onto the plate. 8. Toast will be done, place on plate, and add butter to taste. Time- 10min 1 Person Prep Gather materials Wash hands Put on Apron   Materials •Eggs •Bread •Butter •Salt & Pepper •Apron •Non Stick Pan •Spatula •Toaster •Butter Knife •Plate •Bowl SET WHITE NEEDS MORE TIME Input from target audience was obtained. I sent out this document to my sister in law, she followed steps and created a over medium egg. I then added the visual of what a “set white” looks like so she knew when to flip the egg, and did not wait to long. This addition helped with the timing. (Please not my sister in law does not cook often.) I would integrate this into my own work place by keeping it in a laminated form under my pans. I asked my sister in law where she would keep it, and her response was in the spice cabinet by the salt and pepper. Clean Unplug toaster and turn off stove. Place eggs, bread, and butter back in refrigerator. Place salt and pepper back in spice cabinet. Place dirty pan, spatula, bowl, and butter knife into sink. 2ND SHELF

Efficiency through Waste Elimination and Problem Solving Seven Wastes Visual Management 5S Forcing functions Huddle boards Problem Solving

The 7 Wastes Defects Inventory Overprocessing Transportation Motion Overproduction Waiting

Visual Management 5S: Sort – remove unused and unneeded items Set in Order – have a place for everything. Shine – clean and keep clean Standardize – agree how the workplace should look like Sustain – regularly check adherence to 1-4

Forcing Functions 1- The design of forcing function makes the mistake impossible 2- Stopping the process before (immediately after) a mistake is made

Huddle Boards Define the metrics that matters Make information easy to understand Involve the team in the huddle Know normal from abnormal in your processes Define the escalation path

Problem Solving Discovery PROBLEM GO AND SEE VOICE OF THE CUSTOMER UNDERSTAND PROCESS VOICE OF THE CUSTOMER SOLUTION PILOT Form a Team
