Topic: Possessive adjectives Essential question: How do I express to whom things belong

Possessives  In English, we have possessive adjectives- words that say to whom something belongs My, your, his, her, our, their  In Spanish we have the same thing My=mi/mis Your=tu/tus His/her=su/sus Our=nuestro/nuestra/nuestros/nuestras Their=su/sus

Stating possession  These are adjective, so gender and number matter. If referring to one thing, use singular form, if multiple things, use plural form  Mi familia, mis hermanos  His class- su clase, his classes- sus clases For ‘nuestro,’ gender also matters  Nuestra familia  Nuestros hermanos  Nuestra clase  Nuestro carro

Asking about possession  ¿De quién es (the thing)?

Pausa…  Share 5 details with your pareja  Write 3 questions

Stating possession  Su/Sus means his, her, your (formal) or their. Both mean all of them  Their house- su casa  His book- su libro  Her brothers- sus hermanos  Their money- su dinero  Their classes- sus clases  Before you can use this, you have to establish who you are talking about.

Stating possession  In English, to indicate a particular person owns something, we add ‘s to the word or name. Juan’s book The school’s principal  In Spanish, THERE IS NO ‘S. Instead, you turn the phrase around: The school’s principal/The principal of the school – El director de la escuela My mom’s friend/The friend of my mom. El amigo de mi madre. Mi family’s house/The house of my family. La casa de mi familia.

Pausa…  Share 5 details with your pareja  Write 3 questions

Try it…  Write in Spanish and English My classes are interesting. Bob’s brother is my friend. His (Bob’s brother’s) house is blue. Our family is big. Who is the teacher’s wife?

Check it! My classes are interesting.  Mis clases son interesantes. Bob’s brother is my friend.  El hermano de Bob es mi amigo. His (Bob’s brother’s) house is blue.  Su casa es azul. Our family is big.  Nuestra familia es grande. Who is the teacher’s wife?  ¿Quién es la esposa del prosfesor?

Don’t forget the summary  What did you learn?  What was important?  How does it relate to things you already know?  What was easiest?  What looks most challenging?

Practice – tu tarea  Write 10 sentences (and translate them) using mi/tu/nuestro Michael es mi hermano. Michael is my brother.  Write 5 sentences with the Spanish equivalent of the ‘apostrophe s’ and then using “su”. Translate them Yo soy el hijo de Barry. I’m Barry’s son. Yo soy su hijo. I’m his son.
