The first university in the Hispanic world The University was founded in 1218 by Alphonse IX of León and is considered to be the oldest of existing Ibero-American Universities. It is now approaching the commemoration of its first eight centuries of scholarship. The University of Salamanca has proved an outstanding international outlook achieving true international status when the Spanish Crown founded the first Universities of the American continent. Its statutory framework inspired around 80% of the new Latin-American Universities, who looked up to the University of Salamanca as their Alma Mater.

The current vision of the University of Salamanca The University of Salamanca currently combines tradition and long-term vision in order to achieve high levels of scientific and academic excellence

The wide geographical extension covered includes 9 administrative and academic campuses in Ávila, Zamora, Béjar and Salamanca. The campuses

Students Its 30,000 students make it an average-sized university. It is the second in the country as far as attracting students from other regions is concerned. More than half of its students are from outside the boundaries of Castile and Leon, a percentage that is steadily growing.

VIII Centenary – Horizon 2018 In 2008 the Council of Ministers created an interinstitutional committee to launch the VIII Centenary Celebration of the University of Salamanca in It is a glorious anniversary, common to the Spanish and Latin-American university systems. All the universities will be important protagonists in the VIII Centenary of the University of Salamanca.
