Nutrition: process by which you body takes in and uses food

Nutrients- are substances in food that your body needs to grow and repair itself

Calorie- a unit of heat used to measure the energy you body uses and the energy you receive from food

Hunger- physical need to eat food

Appetite- psychological desire for food

Environmental influences of your food choices: 1. Family and culture 2. Friends 3. Time and money 4. Advertising.

Emotional eating when you feel stressed, lonely sad, bored, food as a reward.

Carbohydrates 4 calories per gram simple(sugars) complex(starches) fiber body’s preferred source of energy

Fiber- is a tough complex carb that can not be digested. Examples are peels, whole grain, nuts, seeds, legumes can help to reduce the risk of some cancers, type 2 diabetes and heart disease also you feel fuller.

Body uses carbs by breaking them into glucose. Glucose is stored in body cells till needed.

Protein- build and repair cells and tissues. Made up of amino acids. There are 9 essential amino acids, these you must eat in food.

Animal sources are the usual for protein. Meat, eggs and dairy. Also from soy. These are complete proteins as they have all 9 essential amino acids.

Incomplete protein usually comes from plant sources as they are usually missing some of the 9 essential amino acids.Examples are: grains, nuts, seeds and legumes.

Protein is needed by body as it is the basic building material of all body cells. It also is needed to make red blood cells that carry Oxygen. Protein gives 4 calories per gram.

Fats give 9 calories per gram. There are different kinds of fat. Trans fats are very hard for body to digest and thus may lead to hear disease.Saturated fats come from mainly animal sources and also may lead to heart disease.

Fat is still good. You must have some to be healthy. Unsaturated fat is the best to use. Vegetable oil, nuts and seeds tend to contain this kind of fat.

Fat provides energy. Fatty acids are needed for brain development, blood clotting, and controlling inflammation. They help to maintain healthy skin, hair and they absorb and transport the fat A, D,E,K.

Stored fat is known as adipose tissue. This fat provides insulation and protection.

Cholesterol- a waxy like fat substance that is needed to create cell walls, certain hormones, and vitamin D.

Nutrition experts recommend that teens consume less than percent of their calories from fat.

Vitamins- help to regulate body processes. There are water soluble and fat soluble vitamins. Vitamins provide no energy.

Fat soluble vitamins are store in body fat. It is possible to get too much of these and become ill. They are Vit A, D,E and K.

Minerals- elements found in food that are used by body. They are inorganic.

All body cells contain water. Functions of water include: digestion transporting nutrients removing body waste store and release heat cooling body lubricate joints cushioning eyes, brain and spinal cord

Girls need 9 cups or more of water every day boys need 13 cups or more every day. If you are active you need to replace what you lost through sweat.
