Writing

Teenager

Writing on P135 Teenagers’ Consuming Trend According to my survey, growing numbers of teenagers’ expense is increasing. It relates to a few aspects. 30% of the students acknowledged Sample writing

that they often go to computer bars to play games or chat on the Internet. Sometimes they stay there for a long time or stay up too late especially during holidays. 25% of the students said they have MP3 just because others have. 10% of the students

said that they have cellphones and they mainly use it to chat with others or send messages. 60% of the students admitted that half their money is spent on clothes and they also spend some money on hair styles and hair colors just to be cool and up-

to-date. Another 8% said that they collect as many their idols’ pictures as possible no matter how much they will cost. I think teachers as well as parents and society should pay attention to the above phenomena and guide the teenagers to consume properly.

Writing on P264 ● What is life like for young people in China today? ● How would you describe your life to someone who knows nothing about you, your school, family, friends or country? Questions

● How many aspects of youth culture are covered in this unit? What are they? ● What are your interests? ● Why do you have these interests? ● How important are they to your own life? ● Why do you spend your time this way?

● Do you have any other interests or take part in other activities? Notes Notes ● Avoid just writing a list of the things you do every day. ● Don’t have to include every detail of your daily life.

● You’d better select the most interesting parts. ● Try to explain why you do the things and how you feel about them. ● Some of the sentences from the previous exercise may be useful. ● Your essay should include at least 200 words.

Sample I’m a middle-school student in Shanxi, China. My name is Chen Xiao. We Chinese students here always lead a busy life. Take myself for example, in order to come to school on time I have to get up at six in the morning. After spending a whole day studying

and doing the endless exercises, I usually go to bed at half past ten pm. According to teachers and parents, only in this way can we pass the entrance examination or we’ll fail to go to college nor we’ll have a bright future.

Although I’m very busy, I have a lot of interests. So I’m always looking forward to weekends and holidays when I’m free to do what I like. What interests me most is playing with computers. You may wonder why I say “playing with”. That’s because I not only play games or surf the

Internet but also I do something else with my computer. I like to think about software and hardware. I want to know some principles and theories about them, so I have subscribed to Computer Lovers for about six years. Despite the fact that I can’t read the contents in the magazine completely,

it helps me a lot. My computer skill is the best in my class or even in my school. Some teachers often ask me to help them with their computers in class or at their homes. When some students call me Superman, I’m very proud. Maybe computer science will be my major in the future.

My other interest is playing the violin. I’ve been practicing it since I was ten and I have played it many times on the stage. I like to take part in many of our school activities. In the recent School Art Festival, I read a poem with a girl student and we

four boy students acted out a sketch. Both of our acting won prizes. I think as modern middle-school students we should have many skills and abilities so that we can fit in with the competitive society. But my parents think I’ve spent too much time and

energy on these activities. Maybe they are right. After all I have to pass the entrance examination first. So I will have to make some adjustment so that I can have a happy, healthy and balanced life.

Homework 1. Share your writings with each other trying to help correct the mistakes in them. 2. Do the first three exercises in Language Practice.
