EducateAdvocateSupport STRATEGIC PLANNING January 2016 Strategic Oversight Council tasked SPC to update Mission Statement – Key: Evolve, don’t disrupt – Objectives: more Concise; Easy to Remember focused on What, and Why, Not How – Clarify that “Educate, Advocate, Support” is not our mission – Its How we do our mission – Clarify distinction between “educating the public” about Aerospace/Cyber power, and academic education (AEC) Now on Draft #3 14

EducateAdvocateSupport STRATEGIC PLANNING No “Mission Statement Police” but a few insights: – Short (Concise) – Clear Language – Focus on What and Why, not How – Real Key is to Answer Question, “Why does AFA exist?” Recommend an “Intent” Statement to Accompany the “Mission” Statement – State the Organization’s High-level Intentions of How to Execute the Mission 15

EducateAdvocateSupport STRATEGIC PLANNING Current AFA Mission Statement: “Our mission is to promote a dominant United States Air Force, a strong national defense, to honor and support Airmen, and to remember and respect our Air Force Heritage.” Proposed AFA Mission Statement: “Promote a dominant United States Air Force as the foundation of a strong national defense” 16

EducateAdvocateSupport STRATEGIC PLANNING Current Intent Statement To Accomplish this, we EDUCATE the public on the critical need for unmatched aerospace power and a technically superior workforce to ensure US national security ADVOCATE for aerospace power, aerospace education, STEM, and our Airmen SUPPORT The Total Air Force, the Air Force Family, and aerospace education Proposed Intent Statement To Achieve this, we will EDUCATE the public about the vital role of air, space, and cyberspace power; ADVOCATE for a dominant Air Force; SUPPORT and honor those who accomplish the mission – past, present and future; and PROMOTE aerospace-focused education and STEM programs to sustain our technological advantages 17

EducateAdvocateSupport STRATEGIC PLANNING Key Takeaways – AFA exists to promote a dominant US Air Force. EVERYTHING WE DO IS FOCUSED ON THAT JOB – “Educate, Advocate, Support, Promote” is not our mission – It’s how we do our mission – Maintains academic education as one of our key “Hows” – Critical for a 501c(3) educational charity – Separates “educating the public” from academics – Mission statement shorter, more memorable, fewer words – Removes language about educating/advocating to national leadership – Don’t want to get into “lobbying” gray area 18

EducateAdvocateSupport STRATEGIC PLANNING What the SPC Wants: – Comments, Criticisms, Platitudes – Understand why this is an important change – Getting our mission right is an important prelude to understanding our organization – SPC needs to know where this doesn’t fill the bill – SPC wants to introduce the concept of refining our mission with the Field 19

EducateAdvocateSupport MEMBERSHIP Major Issue Increase in March 2016 over 2015 – Total Members: 3/16 – 93,557 vs 3/15 – 92,997 – One Year, Two Year, Community Partners, Corp. Members are Down – eMembers, Student Members, Life Members, are Up – Membership Revenue down $112K (11%) 20

EducateAdvocateSupport MEMBERSHIP Strong Membership Base is Vital to AFA – Bigger Voice – Drives Revenues (Advertising, Royalties, etc.) – Better Support Aerospace Education Programs – Better Support the Total Force, Their Families, & Veterans Every Airman a Member (EVAM) – Five Test Chapters – Success of Program TBD 21

EducateAdvocateSupport MEMBERSHIP Chapters Are Key To Growing Membership – VP Membership – VP Community Partners – Renewals as Important as New Members – Membership Element in All Chapter Activities Utilize the Local Community – AFB Groups (CGOs, AFSA, Chiefs Gp., etc.) – Chambers of Commerce – Military Affairs Community – Veteran Groups 22
