RHETORICAL CONTEXT STRATEGIES What is my purpose? What is the problem that needs to be addressed? How will this purpose be achieved? Who is my intended audience? What type of information would best sway this audience? What does this audience expect in terms of formality and credibility? What genre does this writing fall under? What are the formatting considerations for the genre? What writing style is more appropriate for this genre? What are the expectations of document design and structure?

NEW VOCABULARY Rhetorical Appeals: Ethos Pathos Logos

BELIEVING AND DOUBTING GAME John lives in a house right next to Barry. John’s dog Spike is an adventurous young pup who sometimes sneaks out of the house and has frequented Barry’s yard for a bathroom break. Barry has warned John about Spike’s deposits. Barry also has a tomato garden which he loves; every week he maintains the tomatoes with fertilizer and sprays them with pesticide to keep away any rodents or insects. One day, John comes home and finds Spike lying on his front porch, unconscious, with smeared tomatoes all over his face. He rushes him to the Animal Hospital and the doctors explain Spike has digested pesticide.

GROUP ACTIVITY- USING RHETORICAL APPEALS In your unit 1 groups Select a side in the believing and doubting game. Do you think Barry or John is most responsible here? Imagine you are a lawyer in a courtroom presenting to a jury and are tasked with arguing against Barry or John. Make an argument utilizing all three rhetorical appeals to support your side. This should be at least one paragraph long

CLASS DISCUSSION- PAST USES OF RHETORIC Take 1 min to reflect on how you have used rhetoric or had rhetoric used against you in the past. Then share one of these experiences in the past You should consider: What were you trying to accomplish? Who was your intended audience? Which of the rhetorical appeals did you use? Which rhetorical appeal seemed most effective?

BLOG INSTRUCTIONS Submit your URL via by Wednesday Your blogs should be in either text, video format (Vlog), or audio format (podcast). Do not use text posts for this class. Recordings should be approximately 2-3 minutes long or text entries should be 150+ words Your blogs will NEVER have points deduced for grammar or spelling errors From time to time you will be asked to read and evaluate entries from your classmates’ blogs, so make sure your entries do not contain information you are uncomfortable with others reading

HOMEWORK: Blog Entry 1 Submit link via by Monday 5-23 Blog entries this semester should be in either vlog or podcast format. Focus: Past uses of rhetoric Take a few minutes to think back on your past experiences with language and persuading people. Select and describe one or more times you used rhetoric to convince someone. What happened in this experience? Were you successful or unsuccessful in your attempt to persuade? What strategies did you use to persuade your audience? Would these be best described as ethos, pathos, or logos?
