Protecting Portfolio Value By Tim Washington September 28 th, 2011

PPM Execution At the highest level, Project Portfolio Management has four basic components: All the steps necessary to construct an optimal portfolio given current limitations and constraints. Higher portfolio maturity translates into a greater realization of the benefits of project portfolio management. Selected projects must align with the business strategy and meet other important criteria. The result: the portfolio will contain a higher percentage of winning projects. During the execution of an optimized portfolio, the aggregate project benefits (portfolio value) must be protected. This occurs by monitoring projects, assessing portfolio health, and managing portfolio risk. The Goal: The Goal: Maximize Value to the Organization Select the Right Projects Optimize the Portfolio Mature the Portfolio Processes Protect the Portfolio’s Value

PPM Execution Safeguard the Portfolio’s Value Activities involved: PROJECT MONITORING PORTFOLIO ASSESSMENT PORTFOLIO RISK MANAGEMENT During the execution of an optimized portfolio, the aggregate project benefits (portfolio value) must be protected. Otherwise, we risk losing portfolio value. This occurs by monitoring projects, assessing portfolio health, and managing portfolio risk.

PPM Execution Safeguard Portfolio Value So Far…. We’ve selected the right projects for our portfolio Then we optimized the portfolio under current limitations and constraints Now, we need to track the project investments, otherwise we risk losing portfolio value.

PPM Execution Drive the ship Project Monitoring The goal is to deliver the goods (portfolio value) “All efforts should now be put into safeguarding the value of the portfolio.” Therefore…. In a turbulent project environment, it is critical for the management team to drive future portfolio actions based on current project results

PPM Execution Portfolio Dashboard Combining key project metrics will produce a dashboard to monitor portfolio health.
