Risk Workshop Overview
The Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HWS) Team will be facilitating a number of Safety Risk Workshops across all Schools and Offices over the next six months.
These Workshops will be made up of a four hour facilitated session with a range of representatives from your School or Office that work with each specialized operational area.
These workshops are different from the Risk Workshops that are currently being undertaken by the Manager Risk, Jodi Collings in that the HSW Team are looking at operational HSW risks.
The benefits of this approach are:
To apply a common methodology for identifying hazards and analyzing HSW Risks across each School and Office.
Identify and document all key hazards and risk categories faced by each School and Office in a detailed HSW Risk Register to enable effective control of the very high risks.
Aggregate common risks into the Murdoch University risk register, to capture all key risk information at a strategic and executive level.
Enables the level of risk to be understood, thereby ensuring that unacceptable levels of risk are managed appropriately.

In order to be most effective, we must remain focused on the risks most critical to your School or Office!

Business Manager
Representative supervisor from each of your operational activities
Health, Safety and Wellbeing Committee Members
How will it be conducted:
The HSW team will set up the meeting and consult with the Business Mangers to establish who will be participating.
The HSW Team will facilitate the meeting to identify the range of hazards and establish the risk levels associated with input from the representatives.
The risk register will then be populated and appropriate controls in consultation will be identified and ranked for ongoing close out actions.

Analyzing Risks
Helps us understand the magnitude of both the positive and the negative consequences of a risk event, as well as the likelihood of those consequences occurring. This will enable Murdoch University to prioritize risks, and therefore initiate its risk treatments effectively.
The likelihood of an event occurring is a function of the number of ways it can occur:
How many times an event has happened in the past?
Have conditions changed in a way that could increase the likelihood of a risk occurring?
The Consequence of the risk is assessed using risk matrix:
What is the cumulative impact of the risk? For example, what is the safety impact.

Evaluation of the risks arising from a hazard, taking into account the adequacy of any existing controls and deciding whether or not the risks is acceptable.

The best control measure to treat the risk involves eliminating the risk—that is removing the risk from the workplace. If that is not possible you must minimise risks, so far as is reasonably practicable.
When determining the most suitable controls, you must consider various options and choose the control/s that most effectively eliminates the hazard or minimises the risk in the circumstances.
This can be a single control or it could be a combination of different controls that together provide the highest level of protection that is reasonably practicable.
