U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps Our Next Generation of Leaders CAPT Jim Monahan, USN (Ret.) Executive Director

Who we are We are a federally chartered non-profit civilian youth training organization, for young people ages 11 through 17. We are sponsored by the Navy League of the United States and supported by the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard. The goals of our program are to: Develop an interest and ability in seamanship and seagoing skills. Instill principles of good citizenship and strong moral principles. Demonstrate the value of an alcohol-, drug- and gang-free lifestyle. Expose cadets to the prestige of a military career. 2

Two programs, one mission Our mission is to “to encourage and aid American youth to develop, train them in seagoing skills, and to teach them patriotism, courage, self-reliance and kindred virtues…” Our two programs: 1.Navy League Cadet Corps (NLCC) – our junior program, ages 11 through 13. This program introduces cadets to naval life through instruction in basic seamanship and leadership 2.Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) – our senior program, ages 13 through 17. This program exposes cadets to the full rigors of a military training program. 3

Through our advancement system, cadets have many opportunities to lead groups of their peers. Advanced training pushes cadets to expect the best from themselves and from others. Maritime skills training is a critical element of our program 4 Training the next generation of leaders

Cadets engaged in training 5 Cadets carefully maneuver a P-3C propeller onto a stand at Fleet Readiness Center Southeast (FRCSE) Power Plants (400) Division on July 8. FRCSE Sailors identify engine and propeller discrepancies, repair and replace components, and return them to Navy squadrons ready for tasking. (U.S. Navy Photo by Kaylee LaRocque)

STEM Training - SeaPerch 6 Curriculum designed in 2003 by MIT Funded by the Office of Naval Research as part of their educational outreach AUVSI Foundation manages program Students learn design and engineering principles by building an underwater ROV (Sea Perch) and participating in a SeaPerch Challenge

STEM Training - CyberPatriot National high school cyber defense competition designed to: Teach the importance of cyber defense and good computer security practices Motivate all participants to consider STEM academic disciplines to meet our nation’s needs Inspire participants to become the next generation of cyber defenders and our nation’s “digital workforce” 7 Air Force Association

The benefits of our program Good for our country Cadets perform community service. Cadets connect with local veterans. Good for our Navy and Coast Guard We are not a recruitment program, but our cadets join the military at high rates. We help shape capable and competent Sailors and Officers. Good for our nation’s youth Cadets demand the best from themselves and others. Cadets have a competitive edge no matter what they do in life. Cadets are eligible for military advanced pay grade programs. Cadets can compete for scholarships. 8

Why support Sea Cadets “It’s that feeling that you couldn’t quite put your finger on, but it was the reason you missed out on parties and football games to attend color guards and drills: a higher purpose.” “You’ll learn a sense of purpose and honor that I guarantee cannot be learned anywhere else.” Sea Cadet testimonial (Nov 2014) 9
