2. OFFICER TRAINING PROGRAM
5 level rank progression
Level 1 and 2 completed at corps level
Remaining levels completed at OTC weekends each fall
Just as we provide a training program for the cadets, we also provide a training program for our officers to assist them in their development.
This training is delivered in a 5 level rank progression
Level 1 and 2 are completed at the corps level under the direction of the corps CO. Testing is to be conducted by the Squadron DSO at the request of the corps CO.
Once the rank of Midshipman is attained, the officer must hold that rank for a one period before progressing to ASLt.
The same time frame is observed for promotion to SLt.
A period of 2 years is served before promotion to Lt

3. SUBJECTS COVERED IN THE OFFICER TRAINING PROGRAM
Introduction to the Navy League
Allows new members to gain some insight into the organization.
Understanding Youth Issues / Abuse Recognition and Management / Harassment Policy
When combined, these subjects encompass all material related to the prevention of abuse and harassment in the NL Cadet program.
Environmental Awareness
An introduction to environmental procedures that should be followed during NL Cadet activities.
Drill
Instruction on basic standing and marching movements, ceremony, and procedure.

Uniforms
An introduction to the NL Officer uniform and its maintenance.
Divisional System
Information on the history, practice, and the Navy League’s use of the divisional system.

Theoretical and practical aspects of teaching to cadets.
Officer Like Qualities and Leadership
Instruction on the methods and practices used by NL Officers when dealing with cadets.

Duties and Responsibilities
Information on the responsibilities of different officer positions in a NL Cadet Corps.
Taking Command
All procedures, reports, and practices required for taking command of a NL Cadet Corps.
Recruiting and Selection
Discussion on recruiting plans and strategy, plus “best practices”.
Branch Relations
Discussion on the procedures for interacting with the local branch and how the relationship works.

Division Relations
Discussion on the procedure for interacting with the division and how the relationship works.
Staff Management and Officer Development
Covers officer development, records, and delegation of duties.
Local Safety Policy
Information regarding safety during cadet activities and creating a safety policy.
These subjects are covered in depth over the whole of the 5 year Officer training program. Over the course of the summer, we will be introducing the mandatory subjects in the Pre-Enrollment Training portion, as well as delving into some of the other subject levels in order to give you the tools you will need to become a successful Officer.

7. Navy League Cadet Mission Statement
The objectives of Navy League Cadets are to give young girls and boys mental, moral and physical training and develop patriotism, good citizenship, a sense of duty, discipline, self-respect, and respect for others, in a nautical environment suited for young people.

Many times over your Officer career, you will be asked the question “What is Navy League Cadets about?” or “What do you do?”. Here is the answer to the first part.
Before anything else, this is the heart of what we want our cadets to come away with from our program. We need to keep this in mind when delivering all aspects of our program to these young cadets.
To this point, based on this mission statement, we have come up with the following objectives that we strive to attain with every cadet

CTS 01 - The aim of this subject is to familiarize new cadets with basic organizational knowledge in order to ease them into the system.
CTS 02 - The aim of this subject is to teach cadets the proper method of wearing and maintaining the uniform.
CTS 03 - The aim of this subject is to inform cadets of the history and objectives of the Navy League.
CTS 04 - The aim of this subject is for the cadets to learn the minimum number of movements to perform in a parade with a march past
CTS 05 - The aim of this subject is to instill national, community, and corps pride in the cadets, and to allow them the opportunity to perform volunteer acts within the community.
CTS 06 - The aim of this subject is to teach cadets the seamanship skills necessary for sailing, and to introduce them to fancy Ropework.
CTS 07 - The aim of this subject is to teach cadets about a wide range of significant naval topics.
CTS 08 - The aim of this subject is to enhance the cadets interest in boating and to teach basic skills.

CTS 09 - The aim of this subject is to introduce cadets to First Aid and to foster an interest in further developing FA skills.
Ensure that candidates are aware that CTS 09 is no longer taught by Navy League officers as part of the regulated program. It may be offered under the Saint John Life Saver program as optional training.
CTS 10 - The aim of this subject is to teach cadets basic leadership theory and to provide them with leadership experience.
CTS The aim of this subject is to teach cadets how to read a map and determine a position using information on a map.
CTS 12 - The aim of this subject is to introduce cadets to the three elements of the Canadian Cadet Movement
CTS 13 - The aim of this subject is to further develop skills taught in mandatory subjects through fun activities and friendly competition, as well as to encourage personal fitness.
Express the importance of CTS 13.
This is where officers can flex their creative muscles by developing fun and interactive lessons and activities to help hammer home more difficult concepts and to reinforce teaching points.
Give examples like knot games, rank races, elimination drill.

11. NL 220 Cadet Training Standards
To achieve this, the Cadet Training Standards were developed in order to meet the needs of the program. The Cadet Training Standards operate in the same 5 level system as the Officer standards we just covered. With the main difference being the time frame used.
Levels 1 to 4 are each half year programs consisting of 30 periods of instruction while Level 5 is considered a full year of 60 periods of instruction.
Promotions are as listed in the diagram while at Level 5, Cadets are promoted to PO2 and may be appointed to the higher ranks of PO1, CPO2 and CPO1 based on merit and ability

12. NL 220 – CADET TRAINING STANDARDS TRAINING SUMMARY
Explain layout of training summary as found in the NL Again stress the idea that instructors are to develop and use CTS 13 classes as fun reinforcement of taught principles from each level. These classes have to have as much time and development as a regular class lesson plan.

These training formats are not lesson plans. They are layout formats which informs you of the details of what your class should consist of. This is the base information to be used in developing your own lesson plan which will best suit your personal instructional style.
