Presentation transcript:

The following activities utilize basic skills in a variety of easy to manage lead up games. The emphasis is on participation and having fun.

 Practice basic skills (dribbling, pivoting, passing, catching)  Develop physical fitness through lead up games  Have fun.

 Students attempt to perform skills with proper technique. The following instructional cues should allow you to be successful, reduce the risk of injury, and eliminate the development of improper habits.  The four basic skills in basketball are:

 Use one hand to repeatedly bounce the ball. It is a fundamental skill for advancing the ball down the court and maneuvering for better offensive position.  Spread the fingers, dribble with the pads of the fingers.  Push the ball rather than slapping it downward.  Dribble the ball below the waist  Try to keep your head up and eyes focused ahead.  Flex and extend the elbow to provide force.  Bend the knees to keep your body low.

 Keep one foot in contact with the floor while rotating around it. The player with the ball must establish a pivot foot upon receiving a pass or stopping the dribble. Turning on the pivot foot is acceptable, but it may not be dragged or lifted from the floor.  Keep your pivot foot in contact with the floor.  Rotate on the ball of the pivot foot without lifting or dragging it.  Use the other foot to step so that your body is between the ball and your opponent.  Hold the ball firmly with both hands.  Keep both elbows out to help protect the ball.

 Throw the ball to another player. Although many different passes are used, these teaching cues are common to each.  Hold the ball with the finger pads and thumbs behind the ball.  Step the direction of the pass.  Extend the arms quickly and snap the wrists.  Use the fingers and thumbs to push the ball.  Follow through; the palms should be facing the floor.

 Start with the ball at chest level.  Spread the fingers on each side of the ball, thumbs behind the ball.  Keep the elbows out.  Push the ball and follow through.

 Hold the ball as in the chest pass.  Pass the ball to the receiver on the first bounce.  Bounce the ball about 2/3 of the way tot eh receiver.

 Bring the ball behind the head; point elbows at receiver.  Pass the ball and follow through.

 Description: Students will perform 10 dribbles of each in unison with their teammates. Keep head up and eyes focused.  While kneeling  Under the leg while kneeling  While sitting down  Low to the ground  While standing on one foot  While spinning around  Behind the back

 Description:  Students are lined up facing the audience. Students preform the movements in unison with their teammates.  Move ball around neck, waist, knees, ankles.  Typewriter: Tap ball with each finger individually as low as possible and as fast as possible.  Low Rider: Dribble the ball in a small circle with the right hand, keeping the left hand out to protect it from defenders. Change hands/directions.  Figure 8 around legs: move ball in a figure 8 motion from the inside to the outside.  Hammer: beat ball with fingers as close to the floor as possible and as fast as possible  Spider: Ball is dribbled between legs (low and fast) with fingers moving from front to back, alternating dribbles (right, left/front then right left/back).

 Description: Students make a layup line on the right side of the basket and use their right hand. One at a time the student dribbles with the ball and taps it off the glass. The second person in line receives the ball in the air and re-taps the ball off the backboard. The next person in line receives the ball in the air and re-taps it off the backboard. The final person in line receives the ball in the air shoots the ball for a made layup.
