Purdue Center for Regional Development - Strategic Doing © Assets: the building blocks for regional transformation

Purdue Center for Regional Development - Strategic Doing © Introduction: The challenge facing regional collaborations (and higher education) in transformation efforts The failure of strategic planning as a tool A different way to approach big challenges

Purdue Center for Regional Development - Strategic Doing © What’s an asset? Can be physical (eg, money, buildings, equipment) or intangible (eg, specialized knowledge, relationships, influence) Only the person that “owns” the asset can make it available to the effort Those with the asset must be willing to share it

Purdue Center for Regional Development - Strategic Doing © Assets have the most value when they are linked and leveraged.

Purdue Center for Regional Development - Strategic Doing © The final project: A downtown makerspace, open to both students and community members, with support for entrepreneurial initiatives that emerge from ideas in the space. (Merced, California)

Purdue Center for Regional Development - Strategic Doing © Each person at your table will take one of the asset cards and lay it on the table, reading it to the group. Together, see if you can think of 3 ideas that would combine at least 3 of those assets. Have someone in the group write down the ideas. If you have more time, draw a new set of asset cards and repeat.
