7 The Lisbon Agenda Lisbon objective (2000): to become the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world capable of sustainable economic growth with more and better jobs and greater social cohesion (+ respect for the environment)  Why? EU lagging behind in terms of GDP per capita, employment and productivity rates Facing up the challenges of demographic change and global economic integration (+ enlargement) Need for coordinated action at EU level (governance)
