Today, we are featuring 18 speakers and 24 posters from a variety of disciplines. This is SOPS biggest event and the highlight of researches in the postdoc community here at UIUC. Our keynote speaker is Dr. Adam Kruse from the College of Music. His talk is titled: “Bring the Noise: Challenging the Relationships Between Hip-Hop and School Music” This Symposium is also about highlighting research diversity. We tried to select in part on the basis of topical diversity and accessibility to a broad audience. We will cover a wide range of topics today, and hopefully you’ll find something that captivates you. Maybe you’ll even find your next inter-disciplinary collaborator.

Selection Process Algorithm Abstracts rated by panel (n = 7) Ratings averaged, ranked (threshold at r = 18) Abstracts above threshold got talk, below got poster (unless poster was requested or submitting author is graduate student) Six-item scale used to evaluate each abstract Selection criteria weighted for abstracts that were written for a general audience, submissions that represented various fields, and overall perceived quality. Minimized (but did not eliminate!) selection bias.

33% 22% 6% 11% 28% One morning session and three afternoon sessions.

4% 28% 16% 40% 12% Poster Session: 12:30 to 2:00 pm
