4 the sun devil way the foundational philosophy of the Obama Scholars Program guides our expectations of all ASU students achievement responsibility engagement

8 who are Obama Scholars Meet ASU assured admissions criteria Arizona residents who graduated from an AZ high school this past Spring Completed their admission application, FAFSA & aid file by the articulated deadlines Have a demonstrated total family income that is within the income threshold

9 who are Obama Scholars 1010 Obama Scholars 79.1% are merit scholars average high school GPA = 3.51 average college credits = 16.9

10 who are Obama Scholars  Students from small or rural communities  Students who are an only child  Students who have several siblings  Students who are the first to go to college  Students whose parents have master’s degrees No one generalization can be made about an Obama Scholar recipient

12 scholar success: mentoring scholar success activities

13 mentoring mentors provide guidance and support to Obama Scholars throughout their first year at ASU mentors play key roles in helping students make smooth transition into university life Direct connection to campus resources and services one-to-one mentoring on a monthly basis

14 what a mentor does listens asks questions helps student set semester goals encourages involvement offers referrals discusses challenges and ways to help connects students to campus resources

15 what a mentor does NOT do  do homework or editing papers  tutoring or academic advising  counseling  sharing confidential information about a student with anyone outside the mentoring program

16 first meeting YOU are to initiate contact with your Obama Scholar schedule your 1 st meeting by end of September first meeting expectations get to know each other, share your contact information discuss their transition to ASU so far discuss expectations for both mentor and scholar schedule next month’s meeting

17 scholar success activities campus activities, events, services suggestions provided on a monthly basis discuss with your Scholar purpose of scholars success activities are to engage students connect to campus it is the Sun Devil Way!

21 Obama Scholars program is designed to meet estimated direct costs through three sources 1.scholarships and grant aid 2.work-study 3.expected family contribution (EFC) as determined from the FAFSA –the sum of these three sources will equals the estimated direct costs the program is funded for eight consecutive semesters (fall and spring) as long as student continues to meet renewal criteria http://students.asu.edu/obama

22 how it works estimated direct costs include: actual tuition and mandatory fees standardized allowances for room, board and books/supplies special class/college fees and academic program fees are not covered summer tuition/fees are NOT covered through the Obama Scholars program Scholars may choose to spend one semester in an ASU-sponsored study abroad program

23 how it works Scholars may still have a bill do not forget to factor in the estimated family contribution (EFC) and work-study earnings (FWS) understand standard allowances

24 how it works the Obama Scholars program covers full-time enrollment for eight continuous semesters (fall and spring), provided renewal criteria met each year complete 24 ASU credit hours during each academic year (fall and spring) maintain a 2.5 CUM GPA by end of spring semester each year apply for FAFSA each year by March 1 st submit all required documents listed on MyASU by June 1 st. meet total income requirements ($42,400 or less); assets are also considered maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress each year http://students.asu.edu/policies/sap

25 how it works not all Obama scholars will receive a book grant or an award titled “Obama Scholarship” however, for those who do… the amount of the book grant awarded will be refunded to the student for the purpose of buying books students are Obama Scholars regardless of receiving an award titled “Obama Scholarship”

26 work-study Students awarded up to $2500 in Federal Work-Study Federal Work-Study opportunities, along with federally funded Direct Stafford Student Loans, are programs designed to help students invest in themselves and their education. How to look for a job students.asu.edu/employment/search

31 10 things you now know 1.What is the sun devil way? Achievement, Engagement and Responsibility 2.Who are Obama Scholars? AZ HS grads who directly enroll fulltime at ASU family income is < $42,400 as determined by the FAFSA and met assured admission by March 1. 3.Financially, the Obama Scholars program covers…? Estimated direct costs minus the expected family contribution with gift aid and federal work study 4.How many semesters can a student be an Obama Scholar? 8 consecutive fall and spring semesters (summer sessions not included)

No, however if students are work-study eligible, this amount is factored in as part of the estimated direct costs of their financial aid package 7.Do students have to meet with their mentor monthly? Yes…it is an expectation!

33 10 things you now know 8.Do students have to attend a scholars success activity monthly? Yes…it is an expectation! As a mentor, you may assist in guiding and suggesting what activities, events, programs, workshops, lectures, etc. will best serve your Scholar’s needs. 9.Who do I contact first with question or concerns? Visit the Obama Scholars Resource website - plethora of information, FAQ’s, resources, etc. 10. What is expected of me as a mentor? Meet with my Scholar once a month and be a great resources
