RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AT FLEGG HIGH SCHOOL. By Jenna and Tallulah

HOW IS RE DIFFERENT AT FLEGG? Well for starters you have two lessons over a period of 2 weeks, normally one a week. You do different topics for example: science vs religion and moral choices. You also do most of the more common religions such as Christianity and Buddhism etc. The work and activities that you will do, are a lot more precise and link more to the relevant topic rather than being about things that have nothing to do with RE. The teachers are qualified to teach lessons of RE and they will be focused on that specific subject.

WHAT IS GOOD ABOUT RE AT FLEGG? If you are selected to be Gifted and Talented, a wider spread of activities and opportunities will arise, for example, you get to go on trips to the UEA and visit other schools whilst working on a big project.

WHAT IS GOOD ABOUT RE AT FLEGG? It can be very interesting to find out about some of the similarities and differences between religions and seeing how people’s lives are affected by their religion.

WHAT IS GOOD ABOUT RE AT FLEGG? The lessons are fun and interactive and you barely ever do textbook work!

WHAT PUPILS THINK ABOUT RE AT FLEGG…

IS THERE MUCH HOMEWORK? It depends on how much you got given at primary school, so if you got none at primary it might seem like you get loads to begin with, on the other hand if you got lots at primary it won’t. You will get given homework in every subject, including RE, so it won’t be too bad. There are a few variations as to what homework you will get, some of them include: Projects Research Question sheets Evaluating previous classwork Some of the homework will be given out over a long period of time, sometimes up to half a term, and others will be expected for the next lesson.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS At Flegg, there are some expectations that you may not have had at your primary… During lessons you will be expected to stay in your seats, unless you have permission from the teachers to do otherwise. You will be expected to put your hand up if you wish to answer a question, not to shout out. Homework is expected to be given in on time, if it isn’t excuses will not get you out of it, and sometimes a detention will be put in place if it happens on a number of occasions.

BRAINSTORM! For the next 2 minutes, with the person sitting next to you, brainstorm how you can use RE and why it is important… Here are some of the things we came up with:  We can use RE to develop our understanding of other people’s beliefs as well as our own.  It is important to know about how other people are how there lives are affected.  To help to understand other people’s point of views and communicate it effectively and respectfully.  This is important because you need a wider understanding of other people’s thoughts.
