1 RE isnt just learning about different religions! It gives you the opportunity to… Think about the big questions in life. Think about what different religions believe, say & do. Think about your own opinions & feelings… …its not just about life here in West Mon, its about thinking about the world & our place in it. RE helps you to improve all of your key skills, but especially… Communication – theres lots of discussion; we want to hear about what you know & what you think. Working with other people – you get to do things as part of big & small groups. ICT – you have many opportunities to use ICT to present work in different ways & to research information. Improving your own learning & performance – there is lots of RE project work, where we look at how youve done & how you can improve next time… …so, youre also improving your skills, that will help you for the rest of your life. Year 7 & 8 - Use our RE web pages… …to remind you of class work, to catch up if you miss a lesson or to remind you of homework. 2 In Year 7 at West Mon you will have RE lessons as part of Explore. Explore is a new & exciting way of studying RE, History, Geography, PSHE & English altogether, with one teacher. So, in RE in Year 7 Explore, you will be learning about: All about me – Who am I? Power: Religious leaders Changing lifestyles: Making & looking after the world What you are like What your family are like Where you came from What God says you are like Who your ancestors were Control: Persecution What is persecution? People who are persecuted for their beliefs Responses to persecution Who are religious leaders? Who are our religious community leaders? Do religious leaders still have power? How do religions believe the world was made? How are we meant to look after our world? 3 In Year 8 at West Mon some pupils will have RE lessons as part of Explore & other pupils will have RE lessons on their timetable. However, everybody in Year 8 will be studying the same topics in RE. These topics are: Rights Our world: Pilgrimage Towards a better world: People Vs. The Environment Which is more important? The Universal Declaration of Human Rights What are rights? Martin Luther King Jnr Look at the work of faith based charities Conflict: Religious symbols Important symbols in society & life Important religious symbols What is symbolic language? Special places in our lives What is pilgrimage? Places of religious pilgrimage & why they are important Looking at the lives of Mother Teresa & Chico Mendés Designing a stained glass window Religious symbols & conflict Are people or the environment more important? 4 In Year 9 at West Mon pupils will have RE lessons on their timetables. The topics that pupils will be studying are: Diversity: God is… Power: Religious celebrations & festivals Sustainability: Do religious communities have the power to positively affect the world & the environment? What do different religions believe that God is like? How do believers know more about God? How do believers communicate with God? Choices & Decisions: The journey of life A religious journey of life Religious marriage customs Jewish religious festivals Muslim religious festivals Christian religious festivals Religious places of worship Religious birth customs Religious death customs The influence of religious communities to bring about environmental change Religious coming of age customs Looking at religious festivals in different cultures

5 In Years 10 & 11 at West Mon, RE is slightly different… Instead of having a lesson once a week, you have a lesson once a fortnight. You study RE by looking at some of lifes BIG questions. To help us do this, (& to keep RE in Years 10 & 11 relevant & up-to-date) we use parts ofBBC e-clips: RE. So, in Years 10 & 11 we look at the following topics in RE: Does death give life meaning? Selfish or selfless? What are the benefits of faith? Who is responsible for bringing about change? What makes us human?
