Genres Continued… A closer look at types of poetry. 7 th Grade Reading Mrs. Turner

Today’s Purpose  Students will be able to recognize different genres/subgenres that apply to 7 th grade reading.

POETRY  Last week we learned that Poetry is a type of Genre.  Poetry is words arranged in patterns- usually has rhythm. –Some Genres have “Subgenres”- example: Poetry is a major genre which has many forms. Let’s look at some different type patterns in poetry!

SubGenres of Poetry  Haiku  Concrete Poem  Limerick  Ballad  Sonnet –On your foldable, write down what you think you know/remember about these SubGenres of Poetry.

Poetry SubGenre- *Haiku A haiku is a Japanese poem of 3 lines and seventeen syllables (5-7-5). Example: An old silent pond (5) An old silent pond (5) A frog jumps into the pond (7) A frog jumps into the pond (7) Splash, silence again (5) Splash, silence again (5) Think about the Haikus you wrote during our last lesson…

Poetry SubGenres- *Concrete Poems  Concrete poetry, pattern or shape poetry, in which the typographical arrangement of words is as important in conveying the intended effect as the conventional elements of the poem, such as meaning of words,...

Example of Concrete Poem

You Try It!  Construct your own Concrete Poem in the shape of a star.  Remember your poem should also be about a star (a real star, a TV star, et.)  Try one of these shapes- 5 minutes.  Turn and Talk! Share for 2 minutes with your pod!

Poetry Subgenre- *Limerick  a five-line poem with a strict form poem –aabba  Limericks are witty or humorous

Limerick Example THE DOG BITSY 1. There once was a dog named Bitsy. 2. Her clothes did not fitsy. 3. She ate like a pig, 4. She became a little too big. 5. Her clothes started to ripsy.  **Notice lines 1, 2, & 5 rhyme and lines 3 & 4 rhyme (aabba).

You Try It!  Write a Limerick of your own on the back of your foldable.  Make the subject be a pet  Remember… they are suppose to be funny! 3 minutes  Turn and Talk! Share your new limerick with your pod- 4 minutes.

Poetry SubGenre- * Ballad   A ballad is a form of verse, often a narrative story and set to music.   Think about these… –The Rose- worked on earlier in the year- told the story of love. –Tattoo- tells the story of a girl’s love for her guy.  Can you recall some others? Write two in your example column.

Poetry SubGenre- Sonnet  a poem of fourteen lines that follows a strict rhyme scheme. poemrhyme schemepoemrhyme scheme  Has an alternating rhyme scheme – (e.g., "a b a b"). –Let’s look at an example

Partial Sonnet Example 1. Please listen to my voice above them all, 2. So you, my friend, be spared the pain and grief 3. Of failing, falling hard against that wall 4. Which makes a time of happiness so brief. **Notice how lines 1 & 3 rhyme and how lines 2 & 4 rhyme. This is the abab pattern.

You Try It!- You Do Activity  On your own, compose a Sonnet – (all 14 lines).  Make your sonnet be about your favorite season of the year.  Share (if time permits).  Tonight, type your sonnet at home for extra credit points. You may include pictures too!

EXIT  Which type of poetry have you seen the most of during your life time?  From the two poetry lessons we have covered, which poetry type would you choose to write something of your own?  WRITE YOUR EXIT ON YOUR CARD AND PLACE IT IN THE 2 ND BASKET ON YOUR WAY OUT THE DOOR.
