Before we start… O Throughout this meeting I hope to provide information that you will find useful in keep your children safe on the internet. O I will provide information about where you can access more detailed advice and activities that your children can undertake to educate them further. O I have provided brief information about certain apps that are popular amongst children of primary school age and highlighted potential risks. O Please feel free to ask any questions throughout the meeting.

What are the best things about the internet? O Music O Video O Games O Chatting O Creating

Many children know more about the internet than their parents O Many other children THINK they know more about the internet than their parents.

Keeping safe online What worries you about the internet as a parent? O Things you don’t want them to see. O Strangers. O Hurtful comments/ Behaviour. O Viruses. O Junk/spam messages. O Any others?

Parental Controls Set parent controls on all devices: O Computers O Laptops O Tablets O Mobile devices O Games Consoles O ALL internet enabled devices

Parental controls O Your home internet provider (should) provide free parental controls. O I have searched BT, SKY, and Virgin and these provide free videos showing how to install them. O They are also more than happy to be contacted via phone. O But remember, filters are only part of the solution.

Parental Controls How can they help? O They block sites that are not age appropriate. O Limit inappropriate and illegal material. O Enable you to monitor activity. O More recently parents can set a ‘bedtime’ for the internet.

Risks that children face whilst using the internet O Inappropriate websites. O Cyber bullying. O Grooming. O These risks are small but they are real!

Things to watch out for if you suspect your child is either accessing inappropriate material, being bullied or being groomed. O Excessive use of the computer. O Aggressive/obsessive behaviour regarding internet usage. O Secretive Behaviour. O Change in use of inappropriate language.

Know what your child is using

Twitter O Twitter is a micro blogging website. O People can share up to 140 character messages. O Great for catching up with the news, celebrities etc. O Be careful, You can have a private account but more accounts are public, this means anybody can access it. O Anybody can access public accounts. O Tweets are published instantly. In the heat of the moment, things cannot be unsaid.

Instagram O Used to share photos, text and 15 second videos. O Can use fun filters and users can comment on other people’s photographs. O Children love to get likes, beware children sharing items to get likes. O Are they sharing to a network of friends or is it an open group?

Facebook O Children do have to be a certain age (13) to have an account. However, the age checks are very ‘loose’. O No matter how ‘secure’ you believe your profile is, every update can change your privacy settings. O Do you actually know all of your ‘Facebook friends’?

Vines O Vine is a social media app that shares videos no longer than 7 seconds. O There is very creative and imaginative content however, in just 3 minutes of searching we came across very inappropriate material!!!!!

Snapchat O Snapchat lets people put a time limit on shared pictures. O Children enjoy Snapchat because they can share pictures without making them public. O A common belief is that the photos will be deleted after the time runs out. This is not the case, data is data and can be stored.

Advice to Parents O Know what your child is doing online and on their device. O Ask them to teach you to use any applications they are using so you can explore the features yourself. O If in doubt, ask for further advice from school. O Mr. Osborn is always willing to help! O Report any worries to CEOP.

Stranger Danger Online O If your child is using an app or playing online games and in communication with others, do they actually know the person they are communicating with in ‘real’ life? O Communication can take place either through a head set or even by written messages. Are you able to monitor the communications? O Always remind your child never to arrange anything online even with their school friends. O NEVER MEET UP WITH ANYBODY YOU HAVE MET ONLINE!
