Modernising Scientific Careers: Implementation in Wales – next steps Stephen Griffiths Director Workforce Development NLIAH

Overview Education provision Workforce planning

Education Provision Range of education funded centrally via WG/NLIAH Funded education provision historically covers a wide range of agreed staff groups at BSc and MSc level Nothing at lower levels

At BSc level Cardiac, respiratory, audiology and neurophysiology, medical physics/clinical technology and biomedical science Currently fund education fees and means tested bursaries/part salary. 2 models of education provision

At MSc level Biochemistry Cytogenetics Molecular Genetics Medical Physics Haematology Clinical Engineering Embryology Microbiology Histocompatability & Immunology Audiological Science Welsh Government currently fund Part 1 education and salary but not Part 2 Current investment is £3.95m

BSc/PTP education provision - Key issues Majority of current education provision delivered via 4 year programmes – PTP provision will be 3 years PTP programmes will have integrated academic and clinical provision PTP students will be eligible for support through the NHS Wales Bursary Scheme as of 2012 (current subject areas, new programmes to seek endorsement) Universities/HB will need to develop the clinical infrastructure to support PTP programme delivery in practice In 2012 fallow year to avoid double output in 2015

STP education provision – Key issues The transition from Masters level education programmes to STP programmes is occurring at different pace for individual programmes During 2012/13 we will have a mixed model of education provision By 2013/14 all programmes should be delivered through the three year STP route Opportunity for some STP education in Wales Need to consider HSST provision

Process for new education provision approval Strategic Education Development Group – sub group –New education provision –Changes in level of education

Career Framework Levels Professions Specific Implementation Groups – scoping exercise Current education available Identifying any education under development Planned education Aim: to develop a career framework for levels 1 - 4

Workforce Planning Workforce plans developed locally by HB/Trusts underpin training places PTP numbers to commence education for 2012 being considered by the Health Minister STP numbers agreed a year in advance of others therefore 2013 recommendation being considered Critical you are involved to determine requirement for 2013 (PTP) and 2014 (STP) Workforce plans need to reflect workforce possibilities available through MSC
