1 MSC EARLY ADOPTER PROGRESS IN Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Cellular There are currently 111 Healthcare Science Trainees (Post Graduate and Undergraduate) on placement within the Trust, distributed as such. It is not possible to extrapolate placement capacity directly from these numbers. MSC trainees will require a bigger investment in time. We also need to revisit exactly how the trainee number has been defined. Life Sciences Blood Electronic Staff Record (ESR) of HCS CVRS An ESR cleanse was performed in January 2010 which identified a number of errors amongst the 805 HCS in STH Trust. This exercise is currently being repeated with all HCS leads involved in checking codes and then central collation. The exercise has engaged HR in a dialogue about workforce planning for HCS for the first time but has coincidentally exposed differences in the HCS workforce number on the Schedule 3 workforce planning document for the SHA, and that on the ESR Trainees Currently in the Trust Physiological Sciences CVRS Neurosensory Medical PhysicsClinical Engineering Genetics No placement capacity within the Trust, but supported via distance learning facilitated by a neighbouring Trust. The Trust has 51 identified trained trainers across the above disciplines. All of the rotational placements with the exception of Genetics can be provided within the Trust. This exercise highlighted areas where rotational capacity within divisions may be difficult. STP Trainees The first trainees from the nationally recruited STP programmes will commence in the Trust in September 2011 in Medical Physics and Reproductive Science. Bands 1-4 Development Whilst waiting for guidance from the MSC team on the Skills for Health framework for this group of staff we have made additional proposals to fit in with our current local model in Life Science This is: Recruit to Service Commence MLA competency assessment Offer NVQ level 2 Proceed to NVQ 3 if desired Pilot BTEC National Diploma in Applied Science for academic background Cohort available for Band 4 positions We now propose to pilot an Apprenticeship programme for 6 students who will commence in Laboratory Medicine in September 2011. If possible we will work with local DGH’s to consolidate numbers across South Yorkshire Summary of Progress to Date Second ESR cleanse complete by end of March. Internal HCS Network implemented and meeting regularly. Work has commenced on STP rotations in Life Sciences. STP posts advertised in Medical Physics and Reproductive Sciences. Successful collaboration with DeMontfort University to link in with the proposed PTP due in September 2011. Excellent cross Trust training arrangements established around Yorkshire and the Humber in all 3 HCS divisions. Bands 1-4 scoping exercise has been completed across all HCS divisions with a view to developing this sector of the workforce in the future. Project Outline and Key Objectives Aims To assess the opportunities and limitations of implementing MSC within the organisation in order to maintain high calibre training. To ensure the appropriate numbers and grades of HCS required to maintain future service delivery can be identified. Objectives Identify the HCS divisions able to deliver MSC training in the future. Liaise with HEI’s in the region with the potential to deliver the MSC curricula. Assess training capacity within the Trust and prepare to deliver scientist and practitioner work based placements. Establish collaborative training networks. Identify areas that may benefit from workforce reprofiling and introduce training for Bands 1-4.
