The Art of Zentangle

Essential question  How does the method Zentangle help with creativity?

Art Vocabulary  Zentangle- is a method of creating images by drawing structured patterns.  String-curved line or squiggle drawn inside the border.  Tangle-pattern drawn along the contours of the string.  Pattern-repeating art elements to create a design.  Line- continuous mark on a surface.

Origins  It was developed by a married couple, Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts.  Maria is a botanical illustrator and a calligrapher.  Rick spent many years as a monk.  They noticed that many of the aspects of meditation, which Rick practiced as a monk, were present when Maria was working on detailed, repetitive pattern work.

Examples

Why Zentangle?  Relaxation  Journaling  Insomnia  Inspiration  Create beautiful art  Relieve stress  Nurture creative abilities  Increase attention span  Artistic warm up

Doodles vs. Zentangle  Drawing done without full attention  Free mark-making, simple repetitive pattern  Non-consistent look  Focused attention  Used fixed format and method  Consistent look

 Maria and Rick developed an art method that has become known all over the world.  The Zentangle method attracts fans because it is easily learned, it looks great, and can be adapted to an almost limitless range of projects.
