Boyle’s Law Experiment Starter If a cylinder with a piston is full air, how are the volume of the air and the air pressure related? In other words, as the volume is increased of decreased, how will the air pressure change?

Boyle’s Law Experiment Starter #2 A gas filled syringe has a volume of 30mL and a pressure of 125kPa. If the volume is changed to 15mL, what is the new pressure?

Boyle’s Law 1. Research Boyle’s Law and write an explanation of the law. Include an equation for law. 2. Design an experiment to analyze Boyle’s Law by taking volume and pressure measurements for air as the gas. Your volume range should be from 20ml to 5ml in increments of 1ml. See the notes on the last slide. 3. Plot your data. Make sure you are clear about which variable is independent and which is dependent. Remember to plot the independent variable on the horizontal axis. Fit your data with a smooth curve and decide if it supports Boyle’s Law. Explain your reasoning carefully in your summary. Write the equation for your curve on the graph.

Questions How does Boyle’s Law relate to the ideal gas law? If the volume of the syringe is reduced to ½ of the original, what happens to the pressure? Is the air in the room an ideal gas? Explain. What is the normal air pressure value in Pascals? Find the current barometric pressure at your location in Pascals.
