BOYLE’S LAW 13.1: Pgs 446 - 449

Pressure and Volume: Boyle’s Law  Irish scientist Robert Boyle was the first scientist to conduct “careful” experiments on gases.  He studied the relationship between the pressure of a trapped gas and its volume  Using KMT from yesterday, what do you think this relationship is?? We’ll be keeping the temperature constant…

Boyle’s Law  Pressure and volume are inversely proportional, which means that as one increases the other will decrease:  P, V  We can write Boyle’s Law as P 1 V 1 = P 2 V 2  MUST KEEP TEMPERATURE AND THE AMOUNT OF GAS CONSTANT!

Boyle’s Law Calculations  A balloon has a pressure of 56mmHg and is 1.5L in volume. If the balloon is forced to fill a volume of 0.56L, what is the pressure of this balloon?  A high altitude balloon contains 30.0 L of He gas at 103 kPa. What is the volume when the balloon rises to an altitude where the pressure is only 25.0 kPa?

Boyle’s Law Lab  Head to the back of the room to complete the lab with your partner!
