1 Why should we display our data in graphs and Tables?
Graphs and tables help to display data clearly and effectively. Graphs and tables allow people to explain patterns in their data, with the help of visual aids. Giving people the opportunity to SEE data, not only read it, help others to better understand the meaning of the investigation as well as the results that were obtained.

2 Variables Independent Variable– the variable that you control or change Graphed on x-axis Dependent Variable – value depends on what happens Graphed on y-axis Axes x-axis – horizontal line of reference located at bottom of graph Independent variable y-axis – vertical line of reference located at far left of graph Dependent variable

3 Scales Always use even increments
Count by 2’s, 5’s, 10’s, etc… Take up as much of the graph space as possible X and Y scales do not have to be the same

4 Representing and Analyzing Data
Graphs and Tables Line Graphs: Used to show a continuous relationship between two factors.

5 Bar Graph Bar Graph: These are good for comparing data about similar things, quantities

6 Double Bar Graph Double Bar Graph: This type of graph compares data not just about similar things, but also two types of data related to each thing.

7 Data Table Data Table: These tables are used to display data in it’s simplest form. Name Color Mass Volume Texture Igneous Black 5 grams 10ml Smooth Metamorphic Black & Brown 12 grams 12ml Rough Sedimentary Gray & Blue 17 grams 15ml

8 Stem and Leaf Plots Stem and Leaf Plots: This type of plot allows one to show the distribution of values in a data set by splitting each value into a stem and a leaf. 11,47,21,22,12,14,55,22,33,35,14,15,33,16,17,18,47,22,18,24,27,28,33,34,35,45,46,54,55,64, 75,84,91 Which is easier to read?

9 Scatter Plots Scatter plots: These show the relationship, if any, between two sets of data. The line is called a “trend line”, it shows the increasing trend Is this a positive or negative relationship?
